“Well then, Paco, I would like a quick word with you while the rest of the tribe settle in, if that is possible? Huritt must come too.”

“Of course, my brother, this way please!” Chief Kangee strode off after my father, his head held high, as everyone else dispersed. Huritt smiled at me.

“I will see you tonight, Kachina,” he said, inclining his head towards me, still smiling mischievously. I returned it, though unsmiling. He then turned and walked after his father. I stared after him, thoughtfully, until suddenly I felt a whack on my back. I turned to find all of my friends behind me, smiling broadly.

“Well?!” Litonya demanded.

“Well what?”

“Well, what did he say?” she asked excitedly.

“That he’d see me tonight,” I replied, confused. “Why do you want to know?” They all cast each other knowing looks.

I shall take a moment to tell you about my friends. I have of them, and they are the best friends I could ever have (only I don’t tell them that otherwise I would never hear the end of it!).

First there’s Litonya, who I’ve already spoken about. She has been my best for…well, most of my life, basically. She’s about a year older than me, and is utterly smitten with Alo! Honestly, being my friend, you’d think that she’d have better taste than my brother!

Next, there’s Yamka, whose name means blossom. She is the same age as Litonya, the prettiest of the lot of us girls, and also the sweetest. She has a heart of gold, and is always there for everyone.

After her is Nina, which means strong, and you have to be if you’re Nina. Her mother died in childbirth, and her father killed by the white man. However, she was taken in by Nahimana, our tribes mystic, who raised her as if she was her own, but she now works for my father, and so lives with us. Not a lot can get to Nina, and I respect her for that. She is almost 16, like me.

Then there’s Wakanda, who is the daughter of Nahimana. Her name means ‘possesses magical power’. She is the youngest of the girls, but she is by far the most powerful. She became my friend around the same time as Nina, and I regard her more as a sister than anything else. When I was 12, Nahimana had taken me to one side when we were playing, and told me to keep my friendship with her strong, for at the moment it make seem a game, but one day it will mean more than anything.

Anyway, I will continue…

“WHAT!” I demanded, growing annoyed. This time it was Nina who spoke.

“Well, I was at the edge of the river, helping the guys with the canoes, and I was inspecting some of the men for you-” she smirked. “Anyway, I overheard Kangee talking to Huritt, and it sounded to me, as though he was going to ask your father for your hand!” They all beamed at me. I stared quite blankly back.

“No way. There absolutely, positively, without a doubt, no chance WHAT so ever that I am ever, and I mean EVER going to marry someone like him! Father will never allow-”

“Your father seems quite fond of him,” chipped in Yamka.

“Then I shall refuse!”

“You can’t,” Wakanda said abruptly, and we turned to face her, surprised. Her head was in her hands, bending over, and she had a rather odd look on her face, almost as though she was turning this piece of information over in her mind. It was actually quite scary.

“Wakanda?” Yamka and I were at her side in an instant. I looked into her face, her young, care-free face, wondering.

“What do you mean?” I asked, tentatively.

“I can see it. Your father accepts the offer; I can see him clapping Huritt on the shoulder. He is overjoyed. He-” She stopped suddenly, her normally tanned face as white as the snow up in Canada, and then, without warning, she fell to the floor; Nina lunged forward, and caught her just in time.

“Someone go and fetch Nahimana. Now!” I yelled. Litonya pelted up towards the village as fast as her long legs would carry her. She was back within a minute, Nahimana, the wizened old mystic, who was running extremely fast for a woman of her age, at her heels.

“Wakanda! What has happened? How did she get like this?”

Nina answered. “She just went all funny and- and then she started saying that Huritt had asked Chief Paco for Kachina’s hand. She said that Paco agreed to it and then-and….then…. all of a sudden she just fell to the ground. I only just caught her….” Nahimana had already taken her gaze off Nina and was staring at me, quite lost for words. I stared back, feeling as though all of the air had been knocked out of my shaking body…...
