I cannot believe father! I love him more than anything, but sometimes he can be on the borderline of interfering! He thinks he can do what he likes!
The Kasa tribe have been staying with us for the past couple of weeks, as our tribe will be holding the Native Festival of Music and Dance. I was just going to be in the group dance, but father has made a new tradition; the eldest daughter of the chief from one tribe and the eldest son of the chief from the other tribe must start off the evening with a traditional native two dance! And as Alo is too embarrassed to dance and I am the eldest girl in our family, guess what? I have to dance with the Kasa chief’s eldest son, Huritt, whose name means handsome. Well, he is rather handsome…. but that is not the point! The point is that he is the most pompous, arrogant and obnoxious person that I have ever had the misfortune to meet!
When they arrived, I was standing obediently with my father, waiting to welcome them. This certain procedure is extremely boring, as I am not allowed to stand with Litonya and all my other friends. I was slouching, bored out of my wits, when Lila (Galilahi) prodded me sharply in the arm.
“Ouch! What?” I asked irritably, turning to her.
“Take a look at the chief’s son. He’s soooo handsome!” I turned back to the oncoming party. Walking next to Chief Kangee, and with a rather smug expression on his face, was a teenage boy, with dark brown, almost black hair, brown eyes and, as I was looking for a husband it’s alright for me to inspect places that my father would find inappropriate, a very muscular body. However, there was something about him that I did not like the look of, a kind of unexplained arrogance, which seemed extremely off-putting. Chief Kangee reached my father, and they shook hands.
“Welcome, Chief Kangee, and it’s wonderful to see you again, young Huritt,” my father said warmly, shaking the boys hand. “May I introduce my wife, Ominotago, my son, Alo here, you will remember from your last visit-”
“I thought I recognised you, young one!” cut in Kangee, jovially, “You were only a boy then, maybe 7, 8? But you are far into manhood now I see!”
“Yes sir, I am now 18,” Alo replied politely, most unlike him!
“And these are my three beautiful daughters,” father continued, “This is my little one, Nadie, she is 5, her older sister, Galilahi, or Lila as she likes to be called, is 14, and last but not least, my eldest daughter, Kachina, she is almost 16.”
“I do believe I briefly met you two on my last visit also,” Kangee boomed, smiling down at us, and I smiled politely back, only too aware that I could see my friends in the background grinning broadly, eyeing up Huritt, or else trying to make me laugh. The cheek! I thought to myself, smiling inside. I suddenly noticed that Huritt had not stopped staring at me since father had introduced me, and it was quite unnerving. I caught his eye, and smiled briefly, which he returned with….a wink?! I blushed and looked away, determinedly avoiding Litonya’s eyes.
