Chapter 1

Violet Heartcoon sat on her bed, crying. Her parents were at it again. Arguing.

Most people have a happy marriage. Violet wished that her parents had that. Instead, they argued every other day. She knew her mother loved her father really. The trouble was she didn’t know if he loved her.

Her door opened, and a small boy with raven black hair and dark purple eyes crossed the room. They looked alike, really. Like their mother mostly, but with their father’s ski-jump nose and tanned skin, among other things. Violet shifted a bit on her bed, and he sat next to her. He wrapped his arms around her, long for a six year old’s and she leant into him.

“I wish they’d just stop, Will.” Violet sniffed.

“I know, Vi.” He answered.

“Well, I think that it doesn’t really matter.” Another girl in the room said. She was Violet’s age, four years old, and she looked exactly like her, although with their father’s red eyes.

“How could you say that, Luna?” Violet said, her eyes flashing with anger.

“Well she obviously doesn’t love him enough.” Luna replied.

“What? Can’t you see? She loves him more than you love him!” Violet replied.

“No-one loves Daddy more than me.” Luna sniffed indignantly.

“No way, Mummy loves him more than anyone in the whole wide world.” Violet shot back.

“Violet, Luna, stop it. I don’t think Mummy or Daddy want you to argue.” Will said.

Luna got off her bed and left the room, glaring at her siblings. Will and Violet cuddled for a bit, ignoring the argument downstairs. A small while later, they heard a door slam. There was silence for a few moments, then they heard their mother’s careful footsteps on the stairs. The door opened and she was standing in the doorway to the bedroom. Both children ran to her and hugged her legs. They stood like that for a few minutes until Violet spoke.

“Mummy… Where’s Daddy?” She asked quietly.

“He’s… He’s gone.”
