Do I dare?

Dare I do?

These were the questions running through the woman's mind as she stood silently on what was once a well-kept, golden dirt pathway that used to be bustling with traffic. It was now overgrown with weeds and crawling with rabid dust bunnies the size of large dogs! One of the dust bunnies snarled at her and bared its dusty fangs as she uneasily examined it from afar. It was one big pile of ugly dirt, that was for sure.

Up ahead, barely discernible amongst the trees and shrubbery that sprouted after the many years of neglect, loomed the cardboard cutout of a castle where the Queen Jessica had supposedly lived. The woman shuddered, remembering the battle that her and her friends had faced against the queen, who turned out to be a magical creepy fairy that was trying to trap people into signing their souls away so they would be unable to leave the place. Stuck there forever...

"And yet despite it all, here I am once again." The woman sighed.

Yes, there she was. Returning to the place she had once called home: The Doll Palace.

But what was she returning to? Clearly there were signs that very few, if any, people remained. The dust bunnies wouldn't be so abundant otherwise. She straightened up and pulled her shoulders back. She'd come this far, she wasn't turning back now. Taking a deep breath she let out, "HELLOO!! IS ANYONE OUT THERE!??"

Holding her breath, she listened carefully for a response. For any sign of life. Silence greeted her. Determined to find someone, she forced her way through the wild bushes and ran to her favorite hang out spot. The Stories section. A place full of fond memories. She pushed open the door and winced at the loud creaking the hinges made. If she stayed she would make sure those hinges got oiled first thing.

"Hel--OW!" A sharp pain sliced down her leg. She kicked back wildly and lost her balance. Her face kissed the paper-covered floor first and the rest of her body hit with a thud. A cloud of dust and papers rose up into the air before settling back down, blanketing her. Groaning, she rolled onto her back and started to cough uncontrollably. The coughing was cut short and turned into a scream of horror as a black shadow launched itself at her face. Sharp daggers pierced the sides of her head as fangs gnawed on her nose and more daggers stabbed rapidly at her chest. The initial shock wore off and she reacted, grabbing hold of the evil, furry beast and flinging it across the room with all her strength.

"FUDGE!" she cursed, wiping at the blood that dripped down her face. It landed with a splat on the papers beneath her, which she noticed had writing on them. Closer inspection showed the papers to be poems and stories. All strewn around the entire room as if someone had gone on a rampage. Left to be stepped on and--

"MEOW," the evil beast bellowed, ripping the woman from her thoughts.

"Kelpie!" The woman swore under her breath. Kelpie was the woman's black cat, whom she had named after a very close and dear friend of hers. The cat was pure evil. In fact, she was certain it was the devil himself.

It happened one afternoon when she was on her way to work. She had just pulled out of the driveway and only got as far as two houses down when she saw the small kitten sitting in the road on the opposite side from her. She figured it would move as she drove past, but it didn't. Seeing this, she pulled over with the intention of shooing the little feline to safer ground but when she approached the kitten she immediately saw it was not well. And then she did what had to be the biggest mistake in her entire life; she took it in and cared for it. Since then the cat made sure to thank her by attacking her any chance it got and doing everything possible to get on her nerves.

Finally she got fed up with it and left home, only to end up here. But the darn cat had followed her and now it looked like she would have to endure more pain from the creature. Maybe luck would be on her side and a dust bunny would get hungry... if they ate anything other than dust, that is.

Ignoring Kelpie, the woman rose to her feet, papers sticking to her bloody hands. She removed the papers, scanning some of the words quickly, wondering whose story it was and where that person was now, and set them back on the ground. The place was in disarray and would need fixing up. It was a challenge, but one that Cani Kelani would accept...

"Let's bring some life back to this place," Cani said, mostly to herself. She met the owl-eyes of the demon cat, who hissed in response and attacked.

I remember you, of course. I was excited when I saw you and Sheeta and realized this must be a sign!!

Yes, it would be lovely to bring this place back to its former glory. Know any CPR?

I work at a meh job with unintelligent people everyday. I'm ready for a super long vacation away from it... but that's not likely to happen so getting back into writing sounds like a better alternative to me! Even if I'm not that good at it.

If you are old then I am ancient. D:

Cani is back! Oh my word, I'm really excited. Possibly disproportionately so. I don't know if you would remember who I am, I think our time here overlapped, but that was a LONG time ago. How are you?

Anyways, I am in thorough approval of your story, your mission and your cat (who sounds surprisingly like my own black cat, Sheldon. I never wanted to believe the stereotype about black cats was true...). This place needs to come back to life.

Let me know how I can help. I don't know where you are now, but I'm a sophomore in college (so old. I feel so, so old) so I don't have all the time I'd like, but I have some, and I am ready and willing and if need be shall fight off dust bunnies.
