[I am in love with this series, I think. I do not own the lyrics, obviously, but they really are something. I wish TDP had italics, and bold. It would really make this, I think. Any advice would be loved. Be harsh, if you will, how else can I improve otherwise? I love my doll. Don't you? She's so pretty, and so very fitting for this series, if you ask me. If you would like a song that I feel works so terribly well with this series, I suggest the song 'I Can't Do This', by Plumb. Or maybe even 'Scream', by ZoeGirl.]

The Harsh Facts of Life; drug addiction, part 01

---

I am cold, my legs are shaking

There's no hope, right now I'm begging

For just one sight to show me someone who really cares

My clothes are soaked, I'm crying

There's no doubt, I know I'm dying

I did this to myself, and that's the part I can't believe

- Self Inflicted, Smile Empty Soul

She lay silently on the railroad, her body numb to the chill of the air surrounding her. It was still early, with the sun rising somewhere so very far from her, while she soaked in the feeling of descending from so very high. Julie Montgomery could still feel the tingling of the sensation of the drugs as they raced through her system, but by now, she knew she was descending from the brilliance she had so previously resided within. Slowly, she lifted a trembling hand to brush across her forehead, tasting a lingering of vodka behind her tongue. Moving gently, Julie rolled onto her side, the sharp rocks digging painfully into her side in response as she tried to remember what she had taken.

On shaking legs Julie rose, her arms automatically finding their way about her stomach. She could hear the gentle thud of the approaching train, could hear the road nearby with it's current flow of trucks and cars. As she moved warily from the railroad, Julie began to comb her fingers through her tangled, oily hair, trying to imagine just what her parents would say when she appeared in the doorway. Her brother would be shocked, she knew, but he would welcome her back with open arms, as he always did. No matter how many times she had hurt Jake, he always welcomed her back. Jake would be waiting, like he always did, refusing to leave without knowing his sister was home. She wrinkled her nose at the thought.

A rock dislodged beneath her foot, causing her to fall forward suddenly. Tears flew, unbidden, to blur her vision as she landed on her knees and arms, scraping the pale flesh that was exposed beneath the ruin of one of her shirts. She couldn't remember a dxmn thing about the night just past, but she knew she probably wouldn't have told her parents even if she had. Not even Jake would know. They never did, and she was sure this alone kept them awake most nights, wondering what trouble she'd gone and gotten herself into this time. Julie rose to her feet again, shivering, and rubbed at her grazed arms with frozen fingers.

A terribly long fifteen minutes, Julie stumbled through the front door of what she had once considered home. It had been years since she'd ever thought of the place as home, but still, she returned. As quietly as she could, Julie eased the door shut behind her, cursing when the hinges squeaked and the door seemed to scream in protest as it met it's frame. She let her hand drop from the handle and rubbed at her eyes, sliding casually through the greeting room and toward the back hallway, heading instinctively toward her bedroom. She had barely taken several steps when she heard her father's voice, calling her into the living room. With another flood of curse words, Julie paused in the doorway, glancing at slumping form of her mother, then at her brother's rigid appearance. How long had they been waiting?

“Where the hell have you been, Julie?” David Montgomery demanded, his voice raised, as it always was when she spoke to his youngest child. The slow shrug of her slender shoulders made him angry. She didn't give a dxmn that he had been up all night, worried half to death that he wouldn't see her again. Jake's head lifted, his eyes meeting hers, pleading that she finally tell them the truth – and all of it.

“Out.”

The word drew from her mother a strangled gasp. The woman heaved herself from the seat, rushing to where her daughter stood, her hands moving to smooth the fourteen-year-old's messy, oil-coated locks. Kisses paraded across Julie's cheeks, fluttering hands fell all over her, eyes inspected the damage that she hadn't yet seen. Julie glanced away from Jasmine's pleading face and met David's cool exterior, knowing that beneath the chilly mask lay a man as worried as his wife. Julie stiffened beneath her mother's hands and took a step back, silently daring her father to ground her again. It wouldn't do him any good. Julie had long outgrown groundings and any other punishment he could think of.

“Jasmine, leave her be. It's clear she doesn't want us. Any of us.” David finally snapped, causing his wife's face to pale. It was the horror written across Jake's face that finally forced Julie to turn her back, her shoulders slumping in silent defeat. That wasn't true. She wanted them, all of them, especially her father. Why couldn't he see that? “Jake, I suggest you get ready for school. Julie's clearly too self-centred to give a dxmn about you, or any of us.”

“That's not true!” Jake screamed, his voice pitched with pain. “Tell them, Juls, tell them!”

“Tell them what, Jake?” Julie snapped, her back still to the small gathering in the room. She squared her shoulders, carefully reapplied the blank mask that had so long coated her pale face, and turned to face her family. Or, more of less, what had once been her family. “I told them where I was. I was out. I thought that much was obvious.”

“I can't believe you.” Jake whispered, his face reflecting the hurt that had taken over. For a sixteen-year-old, Jake was more easily hurt than anyone Julie had ever met. “Don't you ever think about anyone?”

“Of course I do.” Julie replied, her voice as stiff as the rest of her. Did she? Did she really think about anyone, other than herself? Swinging once more around, she turned, setting off for the bathroom. She could hear her parents arguing, hear Jake's soft shouts in her defense, but she didn't care. She turned on the shower, her hands moving without the aid of her mind. The hot tap was twisted as far around as it could go, the cold left in it's original position. She was almost certain the stinging, burning water would help clear her fogged mind. Almost, but not entirely.

Do you really care, Julie Montgomery, she asked herself silently, do you really actually care?
