This is what I’ve learned:
The humans are the Final Plague, even the good ones. No monsters more hideous have ever pillaged the earth. And for this, we breathe poison, and we ignore it.
We all wear masks. We hide behind silly words like “all right” and “okay.” They’re easier.
Governments have never existed.
Free will may or may not have existed, but I hope it didn’t.
Good and evil don’t matter.
Being is simply being until nothing can be anymore.
And that’s all I want to know, so I’ve trained myself to stop my mind. It’s easier not to think. That’s what they started teaching us in school, if one was lucky enough to find a teacher. There were no books to learn from, nothing to make us think; the government had burned most of them before I was old enough to notice. I’ve decided this was because they didn’t want the Last Generation to know anything about the world before the sickness, to make our passing easier.
In schools, they taught us what we could do to make dying more peaceful. If I can’t think or feel, dying won’t hurt as much.
But I am not going to die, they’ve told me, and they think I have no reason to want to. They tell me the history books will name me the hero, that I will be eternally glorified. But I don’t believe in eternity, and I don’t believe I am a hero. I’m just the last one left.
Oftentimes I wish I’d died with the others. We all wish that. And now there are spiders on the walls and glass on the ground, and we are laid out like chickens hanging in a butcher’s window, and they expect us to save the world.
But we are not invincible. We don’t have to save the world. The Last Plague isn’t the only thing capable of killing a person. I could do it with my own hands if I had the strength. It would certainly make everything easier. But they are always watching me, and they would stop me if I tried.
Frequently I wonder what will happen when everyone’s gone. We’ll probably die, eventually. I can’t imagine we’d try to repopulate the earth. It’ll simply keep spinning after we disappear into the ground, and it’ll be quiet and peaceful until the sun explodes and everything disappears, and the universe will continue on just the way it had before.
The world calls us the Forgiven, but we call ourselves the Forsaken, and nothing can save us. |
