[This part isn't as good as I'd have liked, but it kind of leads into the next. And I feel sorry for Aero, who's McDonald's don't have playgrounds. Seriously. xD And it is heartbreaking, what with Macca's moving to twenty-four hours now. But they don't have certain things after 10pm. How the heck does that work? xD]

“It's easier not to be great, and to measure these things with your eyes.”

The jump was easily five foot. From where Kam stood, it looked huge, and what seemed worse was the sickly slope just afterward. She couldn't imagine propelling some giant, galloping beast over something half the size and then onto a decline in land, let along a speeding ex-racehorse over a five foot fence and onto a vicious slope. Crossing her arms, she surveyed the rest of the jumps, shaking her head. It seemed lunatic, racing against a clock over jumped one couldn't easily climb over and yet, people did do it. Ana did.

“Sorry, Vanilla's being difficult. I don't think he's in the mood for jumping today.” Ana's smile was nervous, a fluttery shadow of it's former self. From where Kam was standing, propped against a thick railed fence, Ana looked smaller than normal. Much thinner, too, as if she'd been too nervous to eat the past few days. “Thanks for coming with me. Not that I've been much company.”

“That's alright. I can't wait to watch this... jumping thing.” Kam smiled lazily, surveying Ana's attire. The younger girl was reasonably dressed. A pair of cream pants hugged her long, slender legs, the base tucked into a her boots that rose to her knees, as shiny black as ever. A neat, crisp white button-down shirt hugged her slender torso, the collar folded neatly and the cuffs clasped. She shuffled nervously, a hard, velvet covered cap tucked under her arm. “You dress neatly just so you can get dirty.”

“Something along those lines, I guess. Anyway, I better go get Vanilla. We'll be on in the first few. See those stands over there? You get stuck waiting there. Or you could always stand here...” Ana smiled softly, stepping forward to kiss Kam's cheeks. “Thanks. You're the best friend ever.”

Ana had been right. She was fifth to ride, and by now, Kam was assured that she must've been nervous. The first two riders had passed through without any difficulty, their horses performing exceptionally well. The third rider had taken three tumbles and been disqualified, while the fourth had fallen once and been unable to continue due to injury. It was as Ana took her place at the start that Kam's stomach began to knot. Vanilla wasn't an overly big horse, in comparison to the others. He was almost pure white, with his long, silvery mane and tail. He clearly wasn't anything special.

“That one's a good one. You should've seen them last year. Passed without any difficulties, until they came to that jump.” Kam glanced briefly at the woman beside her, following the pointing finger to the jump she'd been surveying earlier. The jump with the steep decline on the oppisite side. “Horse shied, caught her leg, and the pair fell. I heard the girl was in hospital for weeks. It's good to see her riding again. After a fall like that, most horses don't make it back on track. Not the track they fell on, anywho.”

Frowning deeply, Kam turned her gaze onto Ana, staring at the way the young girl was sitting. Ana's shoulders were drawn back, squared off, her chin was lifted, but her face was a little pale. Her long legs clasped the black saddle loosely, one hand clasped the leather reins while the other stroke Vanilla's coat. Ana looked around for a moment, her eyes glassy, worry dancing in the dark orbs before she turned to the horse, mumbling long strings of encouragement. It seemed, though, that Vanilla needed none of that nonsense. The horse looked eager, his muscles tensed in anticipation.

“And now we have a little favourite on the course. Fifteen year old Analouise Harte riding Mister Authority. It's wonderful to see these two competing after the events of last year.” There was a soft ring of agreeance wavering through the crowd. “Goodluck Analouise, Mister Authority, your time starts... now!”

The screech of the siren bellowed as Vanilla launched off, his hind legs propelling him forward. Ana's body dipped closer, her posture almost slumping as she struggled to remain against the horse's back. The white beauty thundered down the stretch, taking the first jump as an angle. He kicked off a little too early, his hooves clipping the top bar so it rocked. Kam shifted forward slightly, jumping when she felt the woman's hands tighten on her arm, squeezing as the pair noticed Ana's foot hanging free of the stirrup.

If Ana was worried, what little of her face Kam could see didn't give anything away. She looked, in fact, as if her life was perfect, as if someone had cleaned away all her worries. As they rounded toward the next jump, Vanilla's ears pricked forward. Kam held her breath as the horse lifted himself over, dropping down neatly on the other side and thundering onward. It was much the same. Jump after jump the pair tackled, with Ana's foot dangling free of the stirrup, her small hands entwined in Vanilla's long, thick mane. At least, until the jump they'd fallen at a year ago came up.

The woman beside Kam was squeezing by now, long crimson nails digging into the pale flesh of Kam's arm. She was biting down on her lip, smearing crimson lipstick along the bottoms of her upper teeth as she stared, looking as if her eyes were ready to break free of her skull. Kam, too, had stiffened, her eyes settled on Ana and Vanilla. Vanilla's body stiffened, his ears flicking backward and forward nervously. From what Kam could see, Ana had kicked her other foot from the stirrup, her attention centred on the jump.

For a long moment, Kam held her breath, staring at the beautiful white Arabian thundering toward the jump, his steps faltering seconds before. He lifted, his front legs tucking well beneath his body as he propelled himself over, his front legs stretching as his hind legs curled forward. His foot clipped the jump as a panicked whinny echoed. He stumbled, his legs giving way and bringing him to his knees. The pair slid for a moment as he struggled upright, Ana clinging to his mane. Nickering loudly, soothed by Ana's voice, Vanilla thundered on.

“They did it! They really did it!”

Kam, having made her way away from the excited lady who had drawn blood from her arm, stood at the fence, surveying the thick crowd for a moment, rubbing warily at the holes in her arm torn there by long nails. Chewing at her lip, she turned, surveying the jump that had caused her to hold her breath, the hint of a scream dying in her throat as the worry had taken hold. For one sickening moment she had pictured Ana and Vanilla going down, sliding down the hill, Ana being tossed over the jump. The horror had been enough to paralyze her as the woman squeaked beside her.

The flurry of colour that approached from behind and sent them both sprawling made Kam laugh as she rolled over, staring at how messy Ana had managed to get. Her shirt was streaked with dust, as was her face, and her long hair had been pulled out of it's neat braid. She was grinning from ear to ear, her smile as infectious as any disease. A brow arched, Kam stared at her for a moment, watching as Ana stooped over her, placing a joyous kiss lightly on Kam's lips, causing the older girl to stiffen momenterily, shocked.

“Did you see us? We were great! Vanilla was so brave, he made it over! Sure, he stumbled, but he got back up, and he kept going. He was so amazing!” She stood, pulling Kam up with her, and kissed her again. Another light, not-quite-real kiss that lasted barely a second. Bouncing on the balls of her feet, Ana set off for the pen where Vanilla waited, his large body covered with a light-weight, bright-as-bright red rug that hid his firm body from view. He nickered as she stepped into sight, ears flicking back as she pulled Kam along. “Vanilla, this is my best friend, Kam. Play nice?”

Approaching the pen, Kam stretched out her hand, watching as Vanilla seemed to contemplate Ana's words. For a moment, it seemed the animal would simply stare at Kam, and then he shuffled forward, sniffing at her outstretched palm before nibbling the fingertips. Ana frowned thoughtfully, watching. Vanilla's lips peeled back a little further as he bit down on Kam's hand, causing the girl to cry out. Pulling her hand away, Kam regarded the horse thoughtfully as he blew through his nostrils, nickered, and turned his back on the two girls.

“I think, maybe, he's jealous.” Kam commented, sucking on her fingers. Ana frowned, staring lightly at Vanilla for a moment before shrugging and pointing at the grass stains on his front legs. The skin was a little pink, most of the fur having been pulled away in the slide. He'd skinned his knees, but that would heal, and the fur would grow back. And, at least, he'd been alright to finish off.

“Calling all contestants back to the stage. Time to announce the winners!”

xxxx

“And Ana made third place.” Kam declared, looking across at Ana. The younger girl was chewing at her lip and trying to scan the pages of some Ancient World book she was reading for an History assignment. It seemed, though, that the constant distractions were causing her more displeasure than anything else could've. And with Kam constantly repeating the events of the weekened, it seemed that neither would be forgotten anytime soon. “You should've seen them, they were amazing!”

“So, Ana, what's next?”

“Next?” Ana asked, looking up from her book. “Next, I think I'll be failing History. Well, next weekend Vanilla and I are riding in the show. A show jumping course. It's pretty complex, but we've been working at it for months. Hopefully we'll make third again, at least. After that, we'll be relaxing a little. More training before the next big jumping contests.”

Kam grinned, looking down at her own school work that was scattered on the table around her. It had been her idea to ask to head to the library, seeing as they were both behind in their classes due to outside commitments, and while no one had objected, there were still more distractions in the library than either had dared imagine. Ana sighed, skimming a hand through her hair as she stared at the group of teenagers surrounding them, their eyes wide as they disscussed the details Kam had just shared.

“We might as well have stayed in the classroom.” Ana grumbled, scribbling down a note on the pad beside her. It was already crammed with notes, an easy two pages, at least, but it didn't look like Ana was any closer to starting her good copy of the assignment. “Did you want to, stay, ditch this? I can't study. I can't do anything. It's too hot.”

“Ana, did I just hear what I thought I heard?” Kam arched a brow, looking at the scrawny teen beside her. Ana, rolling her eyes, nodded as she shuffled books and paper into her bag and stood, arms crossing, her bag draped messily over one shoulder. Kam, following closely, hurried after her, looking amused. “Well. Let's see, won't that ruin your good-girl performance?”

“If you don't shut up, it might.” She countered, glaring. “Because then, obviously, we'll get caught. And it will ruin my good-girl performance. And, on top of it, we'll get into trouble. And, it'll be all your fault.”

Gwr, I have no words. I wish I wasn't dead, it does make it rather difficult to speak coherently. I was away at a Guard competition yesterday and while I was gone everyone posted all this brilliant stuff and I can't tell them I love it because my brain is gone or in Greenfield or something and I seem to have lost my ability to speak.

*sigh* But I did love it.

*sigh* I miss the good old days when I used to ride horses. It's a shame I sucked at it, though.

Why is it that this series keeps making me reminisce? I don't like that. XD
