[Lyrics are property of Live and come from the song 'the Dolphin's Cry'. Kam, once again, is a girl - and the blonde in the picture. Ana, also female, is the brunette. I'm working on a new doll because I don't like Ana's appearance. She doesn't look childish enough. And thanks plenty to all those comments. They're all so very sweet.]

“The way you're bathed in light reminds me of that night.”

Analouise Harte stood at the centre of the stage, bathed in pale golden light. She stood with her arms wrapped around her stomach, her head bowed, and a collection of toys at her feet. She didn't move, not even after various calls rang out through the audience, echoing in the quiet of the room. Her head lifted only when silence had finally taken wing, settling over the confused teenage body of the school. She looked rather pretty, almost the idealistic brunette Barbie doll with the way she was dressed. Like some precious plastic doll princess.

“Good afternoon, Sunnyview High, and welcome to the senior school's verison of the classic Shakesphere play, Romeo and Juliet. While I sure many of you have never read the play, or even seen the film, graced as they are with tongue-twisters and mind-teasers.” Ana's voice carried with a certain grace across the room, dancing over each row of chairs with a lazy sort of quality not easily picked up on. The well rehearsed lines were much like second nature to her, a second nature she had become so accostumed with it was not easily forgotten. “We thank you for your time.”

The curtains dropped, hiding her from view. From where she sat, Kameron Drace couldn't help but wonder as to what was the point in remaking some classic fairytale. Shifting a little furhter, her head tilting backward and to one side, her eyes half closed as she listened to the cheesy music, laced with an undertone of gentle lyrics that seemed to float toward the heavens, filling each and every corner of the spaceous, plastic-seat filled theatre. Kam probably would have allowed herself to doze off, had she not remembered the dream. The dream in which she and Ana had been closer than friends.

xxxx

“Kam? Are you coming back with us?”

Kameron shook her head, her attention not wavering from the slight brunette weaving among the other teens, her arms wound busily around her waist, the small hands clinging to ribs that poked faintly through the thin fabric of the long white gown she was draped in. Rising from her seat, she tossed her friend the briefest of smiles as she made for the stage, pulling herself onto the oak surface with selective ease and following the footsteps of the fleeing actress. In all truths, Kam had suspected she'd have been bored half to death, but it had been good.

“Ana, wait!” Her voice echoed slightly in the large, round room. Quickening her pace, she slowed only when she'd reached the other girl's side, drawing her to a stop. Analouise turned slowly, a smile creeping along her face as she stared at the girl before her, her eyes twinkling. “You were great. Really.”

“I didn't think you were going to come.” Ana announced, crossing her arms as a sly smile teased her lips. “So I do suppose you owe me. McDonald's playground sound alright to you? How about we head there as soon as I help here. I won't be long, cross my heart and hope to die.”

“Sounds great.” Kam grinned cheerily as she turned, surveying the moving teenaged bodies weaving between one another while carting heavy crates back and forth, looking as if they were ready to drop. The backstage crew looked almost as exhausted as half of the actors, but they were at it, moving around the complaining others while pushing trolleys ladden with heavy sound equipment and props, preparing to set up the first scene for tomorrow's performance.

“Kameron! Analouise said you weren't coming. What changed?” The voice was stiff, as if it's yeilder had yet to meet the softness of a bird's song. Kam turned, her eyes dancing across the slightly under dressed youth behind her, a smile playing across her lips in perfect timing as she stared at the blonde bombshell she had dated less than a month earlier. A month, long before her dreams had begun. “Don't stare at me like that. Did you come to see me?”

“No. Dad just wouldn't let me take the day off, that's all.” And I wanted to see Ana, she added silently, daring not to voice the thought around Jasmine Culter, who was still rather tender about the whole breakup. Kam was sure that, if she should ever ask, Jasmine would take her back in a heart beat. “And I'm hanging out with Ana afterward.”

“Ana? I didn't think unconfident emo kids was your thing, Kameron.” It was a bitter declaration, one that seemingly hit spot-on. For a moment, Kam merely stared, her blue eyes widening in shock. She couldn't remember Jasmine ever being bitter. Cruel, honest, but never bitter. “Well, I suppose, anything to add another name to your collection. That's how it is with you. Maybe she's smart. She's not your type, Kam.”

“I'm pretty sure Kameron knows who is and isn't her type, Jasmine. Mr Wilks wanted me to tell you that tomorrow, you need to wear more clothes. You might be tan, but its dark when you move onto the stage. You're bound to show up to the audience. I know you love the spotlight, but your backstage. You're faceless.” Ana's voice was crisp and hard, the cutting edge of it enough to make Jasmine's face redden in annoyance. The pair watched as she scuttled out of view, her lips drawn into a thin line. “Really, I have no idea what you saw in her. She's a horrible person, inside and out.”

“Apparently, I like horrible people.”

It was then Kam noticed how she was dressed. Ana's slender frame was wrapped in a loose pink dress, the kind of dress a six year old might own. The kind of dress that was associated with fairy princesses, tiaras, glitter and magic wands. It took her a moment to realise that, not only was it the kind of dress Kam's ten year old sister might like, Ana was, in fact, wearing it. A pink dress, a pretty, sparkling pink dress. She watched curiously as Ana hitched her bag onto her shoulders and started off, a pair of pink slide-ons slapping the floor as she walked.

For twenty minutes the pair helped pack things away, moving among the quiet chatter of other members, celebrating yet another well-performed show. As the last couple of teens shuffled through the side doors and out into the early evening, Kam found that she was well and truly starved, her stomach rumbling. Ana looked over at her after one particularly loud rumble and smiled. A soft, lazy smile that made Kam's skin heat and her heart flutter nervously. Offering the other girl a hand, Kam set off, her fingers curling tightly around Ana's small hand.

xxxx

She was hanging upside down with her legs wrapped lazily around a pole, a dozen odd lettered blocks only a foot or so away from her on what appeared to be an alphabet climbing frame. Ana's smile was wide, the kind of teasing, playful smile that could only come with awkward questions that followed with peals of laughter. In her had was a chip, covered with a heap of icecream from the cone she was daringly holding upside down, so the fluffy white wobbled slightly with each lick, threatening to splatter the dark asphalt.

“So, let's say, you're stuck in an elevator with someone. You're in this really awesome hotel, with a pool and everything, but somehow, the elevator breaks down, and you're stuck with the hottest chick. And, it turns out, she thinks you're kind of cute. She's gorgeous. Let's say she's a model. Pretty, blonde, with the perfect body. She's got a towel around her waist. Huge boobs, and a tiny bikini top. She's dripping wet. What do you do?”

Rolling onto her back, Kam stared up at the younger girl, trying to decide. For a moment, she tried to picture the scene, the elevator, the pretty blonde with big boobs, the water running across the tanned flesh of some gorgeous woman. A towel, perhaps slipping... it would be hot, at least, if the blonde was using the pool it would be. Finally, propping herself up slightly, she stared at Ana, long and hard. “I guess I'd take my chances. At least, when the elevator was fixed, you'd know, so why not see how far I can get? What about you, then?”

“No way. Blonde models aren't my type.” Ana countered, cursing as, at long last, her icecream fell. It splashed against the ground, the melted bits flicking up to land on Kam's cheeks. Laughing, Ana dropped to the ground, her long legs swinging around to touch long before her. She swung herself onto Kam, sitting half on the older girl's hips, half on her stomach as she dipped forward, licking the icecream from the other girl's cheeks. “Mm. I think it tastes better on the cone. You're salty.”

Heart pounding, Kam merely smiled, trying to draw in her breath as her head swum. Ana's smile was softer now, almost fading into nothing as she leaned over Kam, her nose inches from brushing the tip of Kam's. For a moment, Kam felt certain that, perhaps, Ana felt as she. Or, at least, that Ana felt as her dreams were telling her. And then the girl was pulling away, breaking the trance as she pushed herself upright, smoothed out her dress and scuttled up the long, winding slide and into the interior of the spaceship playground. Kam, sighing, hurried after her.

The inside of the play ground was warm and stuffy, the kind of plastic that contained heat too well. Kam sighed as she pulled herself out of the slide, staring at the large plastic cylinder in the centre, atop of which sat Ana, swinging her legs so the banged loudly with each strike. A smile was playing on her lips, light and teasing. Leaning against the wall, lifting a brow lazily, Kam stared across at the childish girl, watching as she pushed off of the cylinder and skipped over, prodding Kam until she smiled.

“You remind me a five year old. You're so... bubbly. And hyperactive, and you smile so much! I didn't think emo kids smiled.”

“That depends on the emo kid, or who she's with.” Ana countered, crossing her arms as she pushed away, dragging herself back onto the large cylinder, raising a finger to her lips as a call echoed through the playground. It was nearing midnight, closing time having finally come. Ana sat in silence, listening until the dull click of a lock echoed around the playground, sounding loud against the silence of the area. She sat a moment longer, listening, before she pushed herself upright and scuttled into one of the conjoining tunnels. Kam waited a moment before following.

The room Ana had climbed into was smaller, but it held a window. As the lights snapped off, the pair were bathed in silver. A gentle low sent hurtling toward earth, the kind of warm glow only the moon could throw out. Ana pointed, watching as the few cars in the parking spaces pulled away, her gaze dancing then to the couple walking toward a bus stop, holding hands. A smile tainted her lips as she looked back at Kam, trying to resist the urge to erupt into giggles.

“You know, I always dreamed of staying at a McDonald's after hours. Hiding, until everyone left. But, I never thought I would, you know. It's awesome. I'm so glad they haven't switched to twenty-four hours yet.” She chewed at her lip, grinning once more. “It totally sucks that they took the ballpit out, though. I miss climbing around in one. And you! I can't believe you didn't call out. I thought you were a good girl. Hey, Kam, have you ever wondered what it'd be like to kiss someone in a ballpit?”

“Not really.”

“What about a slide?”

“No.”

“Well. What fun are you?”

“I've always wondered what it'd be like to kiss in the moonlight, though.”

“Well, kiss me.”

“Okay.”

With her heart a thunderous echo in her ear, Kam lent forward, her lips brushing lightly across Ana's. The younger girl leant forward, deepening the kiss with the pressure of her movement. Ana's hands lifted, lacing lazily around Kam's waist as the pair slid backward, falling against the curving wall. It was an awkward position, their bodies half arched against the wall as their lips seemed fused together. Ana drew back a moment later, her breath hitching slightly, her cheeks flushed. She smiled as she crawled away, pulling herself into the next section and toward a slide.

“I think, maybe, it's my turn.”

^^ This brings up many semi-pleasant memories for some reason.

I remember, back when I was eleven or something, asking my friend Charlotte to sit on me like Ana sat on Kam, because I noticed a weight on that exact spot always gave me an uncontrollable laughing fit, and because of that to this very day everyone is still convinced that I'm a le.sbian. XD

Good times, good times.

I never thought of it until I read your story. Although admittedly, one of my friends and I have been known to hang around on the playground outside of the abandoned elementary school where we have guard practice. Even when we're dead tired and sore it just doesn't get much better than swingsets and those long tunnel slides and the climby things. XDD.

Yea, I'm a kid.

One thing I forgot to add; read [00] first. It's, like, a prologue. Kind of a glimpse of what Kam and Ana are like. More so Ana. But it's the 'dream' referred to earlier.
