YEAR TWO

Z walked sluggishly down the hall, yawning widely. He could hear his parents moving around down stairs, their voices were just muffled sounds. He could tell which one was his mothers.
It sounded a little more high pitched the usual, but the two year old didn't think anything of it.
His thick socks didn't make any sound, and his PJ's barley rustled as he slipped down the stairs. Crickets were chirping outside the downstairs window. Alice hadn't pulled the blinds and closed the curtains yet so Z could see the street and the Reader's house across the street. Without thinking the little boy pulled himself up into the chair sitting with its back to the window. Alice liked to sit here in the evening...waiting for something.
Z had no idea that it was so she could carry Z up to her room if she saw Zack's car coming down the road. He usually came home drunk.
Z got bored after a few seconds of gazing out the window. He was up way past his bed time but he couldn't sleep. Alice had stuck up in his room right after a bath without tucking him in or reading him a story like she usually did.
Z was slightly insulted by this. How could Zack be more important then him?
He walked towards the closed living room door. Alice was going to have a heart attack when she saw that he had climbed out of his crib AND walked down the stairs all in one night.
Z didn't know that, however, as he reached his little hand up towards the knob.
He managed to get it open, much to his surprise, and the surprise of the occupants within.
"ZACK!" Alice screamed as her husband picked up a table side lamp.
There was a popping noise as the plug was ripped from its socket. Z looked up at his father with wide, clear, bright, blue eyes. Zack's arm dropped a little but he threw the lamp anyway. Alice let out a scream and grabbed the little boy. She yanked him out of the way just as the lamp hit the spot where the child was just standing. The silence that followed the echoing sound was scary. It pressed down from all sounds as Alice starred at her husband in hatred. Z let out a little whimper and began to sob.
Alice got up from the floor and snapped,
"I hope you're happy."
"Not really," Zack returned coldly, "It didn't hit him."
"I COULD HURT YOU!"
"Could you, Alice, could you?"
"I HATE YOU!" Alice half screamed half sobbed.
Zack watched his wife stomp out of the room trying to shush the crying baby while tears streamed out of her own eyes. He stared, bewildered, at the door the two had just disappeared through.
He had never made Alice cry before. He had never actually meant to harm the baby, much less kill it. How could he kill his own child. Zack sat down on the edge of the chair and let out a shaky gasp.
He buried his face in his hands and groaned softly to himself,
"I really fuucked up." |
