~3: Bloodthirsty Savages

Jason shoved me roughly out the door. I was anticipating a screeching shriek of an alarm, my last hope of being spared from whatever Jason was planning.

No such luck.

Instead, I landed roughly out in the chilly air onto the cracked concrete. My knees crushed scattered trash and made an unpleasant squishing as the sewage water seeped into my pants.

“Is that the best you could do?”

I snapped my head up to glare at the new voice. An awkwardly tall boy, younger than Jason and just as pale. Together they stood above me, two pale faces with moonlight casting shadows on them. Jason frowned at the boy before turning to walk out of my line of sight.

“It's better than you would have done, Trevor.”

The boy remained silent while glaring at me. I blushed as I realized that he, like Jason, was staring at my chest. It was unwelcomed attention.

“You're scaring her,” a third voice grunted. A figure rose from the ground, his eyes also glued on me, and he walked slowly in my direction. “Trevor, do you have a blade on you?”

Trevor pulled a piece of sparkling metal from the loop of his pants. He held it out to the new stranger and together they walked towards me. Jason suddenly appeared behind me and brushed a lock of hair behind my ear very gently.

“Trevor, Winston,” Jason said quietly, “Is there any chance that I can have the first bite?”

The other boys laughed, as if this situation was amusing. I shuddered at the sensation of Jason's cold fingers. They had wrapped around my wrists and in no time at all, he had binded them behind me with a piece of rope. He shoved my head down and the unsuspected movement left me motionless.

Winston wielded the blade in one hand and glanced at me before turning back to the others.

“Brothers,” he began taking in a huge amount of air, “I call upon the ancient powers of the mighty one, the Ancient and the Brave, twisted rivals of ill-fate. May they give us the strength to renew our clan. To rebirth those that died in the Great Battle of Eonai. Brothers, let us enjoy this kill in the name of the Exiled.”

The three of them turned to me, fangs barred, and leaped simultaneously. I couldn't scream. And it wasn't paralyzing fear that kept me from doing so. Inside my head, I could her the echoing of my own voice as I made no sound. Maybe it was in a pitch so high only dogs could hear it.

In seconds, I replayed the entire day in my head. Oliver's impromptu invitation, begging my parents and squealing when they said yes, spending two hours searching for something abnormal, and the whole dance floor incident. Was there any way that this could have ended without me getting killed by creatures I considered fictional?

For some odd reason, I noticed that I was alive.

Looking up, I saw a figure blocking the attacking vampires. In one hand, he held an elongated blade – a weird cross between a knife and a sword. In the other hand, there was an object I didn't recognize. He raised the object above his head before pressing a button and tossing it at them. He turned and I saw his face.

The sudden burst of light left my eyes ringing, but his image was forever embedded there. Golden hair swirling like a wispy halo and gray, silver eyes. Thinning eyebrows that were suspended in animated curiosity and uncertain anticipation. A tiny glimmer of something that resembled a nose ring. And on his neck, a dark pulsating tattoo of wings.

He lifted me onto his shoulder and started to run out of the alley just as the light became to disappear. The brothers were still howling in pain and rage as my savior's quick agile steps carried us both away.

I was going to say it was awesome until Toni stole my word. For shame, Toni.

I've lost my adjective, but I did like it anyways. Amazing almost covers it. But not quite. Awesome is better than amazing and that's what it was, I think...
