Emily Maxwell lived in a house on St.George Street that was nearly as eccentic as she was. It had ivy crawling up the yellow bricks at the front, it had a little, ugly balcony perched outside of her sister's bedroom, tiny dormer windows and a spindly windmill stuck precariously on the roof. She liked the house particularly because it seemed as though it was built for a very small person.

Emily believed a lot of strange things. One of her foremost beliefs was that people and their houses should go together. A house with lots of flowers and stuffy rooms should belong to an elderly woman and not someone like a younger bachelor, Just as a home with large windows and a steep roof shouldn't belong to a pessimistic widow. Emily Maxwell thought that it should belong to a sweet mother with several younger children. That was the kind of things that Emily believed, and she stuck pretty firmly to them.

From her house on St.George Street, Emily could see The Vile School, as she called it and the Dreadful Variety Store. Her neighbors had children, which Emily Maxwell hated more than anything. Not only their children, she despised, but nearly every child. With Emily's habit of giving everything she disliked it's own disagreeable title, of course children were Grubby Munchkins.

Emily Maxwell not only had bizarre behaviours and habits, she was very strange looking, too. She had lank, black hair, which she was always attempting to put up, but it was ever stubborn. She had strange eyes that went from brown to burgundy and black at times, and dressed like a drunken mime. Her little cat Odie liked to sleep at the foot of her bed.
