Sporty was a normal 6-year old girl almost. She liked barbies and pollypockets. She liked riding her bike and brushing her hair. But there was one thing that she unlike every other six-year old could do. She could pitch in softball. Actually pitch. Better and faster than anyone else. Always in the strike zone. It was crazy. Nobody could understand it.
As she grew up she got even faster. Even better. She started playing on an actual team called the Hotshots. And that's where our story begins.
"Hey, Sporty." said Lin. "Let's go. Practice starts in 10 minutes!"
Sporty and Lin ran out to the car Lin's car where her mom was waiting. They buckled up and began to drive. Past the bank. Past trees and bushes. Past Hy-Vee and Wal-Mart.
Then Lin's mom stopped the car in front of a softball field. Lin hopped out of one side of the car while Sporty jumped out the other. They ran on the field where the Hotshots were already warming up.
Lin and Sporty grabbed a ball and began to play catch with each other. Sporty held the ball by the stitches and put her arm back straight behind her with her other arm with the glove pointing toward Lin. She bent her arm holding the ball bringing her gloved hand down and releasing the ball sending it zooming to Lin who held her glove out and caught it at her chest.
"That was a great practice." said Coach Z."Now let's see that in a game. You know the Championships is next Saturday. Come ready to play. Oh, and Sporty make sure you don't hurt your arm by the next game. We need a pitcher." he chuckled and turned heading for his car.
Lin dropped Sporty off at her house and left.
The next Saturday came quick and Sporty left for the game.
She had no problem pitching. But her team weren't the best batters. It was the bottom of the last inning. The other team was down by one. The bases were loaded. The count was full. Two strikes and three balls. Sporty couldn't pitch any more her arm was too tired from pitching so much. They needed a new pitcher but who. Lin volunteered.
She put her right foot in front of her left foot slightly at the mound. She held the ball in her right hand in her glove in the front of her chest. Her hands still together came down against her right leg and the hand that held the ball came out of her glove. It went behind her at her side then came the other way. Her gloved hand raised to point at the catcher's mitt. her hand with the ball did the windmill and snapped at her hip. The ball was released and went flying towards the plate. It curved slightly. And passed just at the inside corner of the plate. The batter stepped and swung the bat around her body.
STRIKE!!
The batter was out and the hotshots had won the Championships. Lin jogged to the dugout sweat dripping down the sides of her face. Her teammates lifted her on their shoulders.
Sporty turned to Lin, her bun flopping around on the top of her head.
"Your a hero, Lin!"
