“Don’t be like that sweetheart.” There was a growl deep in his throat. His menacing eyes froze me against the alley wall. My fingers grazed the wall, searching for a brick to come loose, “Just come to me and I promise to kill you quickly.” He smiled wickedly, taking another step closer.

You know how your life flashes before you eyes, during those few moments you have before death. Only, that never happened to me. I didn’t see my boyfriend, my family, and my cat flash before me. Instead I saw a man. But I didn’t see him in my head, I saw him right on front of me. He came from nowhere. It felt as if I blinked, and then he was standing in front of me. Facing the other man who wanted to kill me so badly.

“Erika, run!” He demanded, growling. I stood shocked, not understanding how he could have known my name. I raced from the alley when he yelled at me again, adrenaline rushing through me. My heart was pounding so hard I thought the world could hear it.

“Erika, are you alright?” His voice was soothing, yet there was a worried edge. I turned slowly to see my rescuer. His jaw was set, his brown eyes sparkling with colors. I nodded slightly, gawking at his deep brown hair. Which was cut short, but not cropped. Short enough it did not cover his face, but long enough I could run my fingers through it.

“I’m sorry, I wasn’t watching you close enough. I got caught up in an argument. I didn’t realize he was so close.” I didn’t know what he was talking about; I guess it showed on my face because he suddenly tensed.

“What?” I asked, taking a small step towards him. He reached out with his hand, taking mine, “Erika, it’s me.” I took a long look at his beautiful face, and then raised my eyebrows.

“You don’t recognize me?” I shook my head; my brown curls half covering my face. He reached with his towards me with his free hand, bouncing a curl. He half smiled to himself, deep in thought. I blushed lightly, turning my face away. But he rested his hand on my cheek. Forcing my eyes to meet his.

“Remember every night when you would wake up with the feeling someone was watching. Every morning with a slight chill. Looking at your room, wondering if someone sat in the rocking chair, which was always rocking slightly.” I nodded slowly; scared to know how he knew so much about me, “I am that person.”

I pulled away from him; ripping my hand away with such a sudden movement he stood shocked for a moment. He began to say something, but I spun around, stomping away like a small child angry with their mother for saying no cookies.

“Erika please, won’t you listen to why it was me!” I felt his warm embrace around my shoulders. His lips moved against my ear as he spoke, “In second grade, we used to jump rope together. I would spin and you would jump. The other end was always tied to the pole. Remember when you fell over, scraping your knee. Then I carried you all the way to the principal’s office. You were sobbing in my arms. Throughout the years you and I grew apart. Then when I moved away, you forgot me. But I’m back now, and I’m different. I will never hurt you the way any boy has hurt you, and the only reason I would come into your room, was… well… because… I missed you.”

I spun into his arms, sobbing against his chest. His black shirt would show no signs of my mascara stains, “Rob, I’ve missed you so much!” I pulled him closer to me, wanting more out of the hug. Rob pulled me into him, stroking my hair absentmindedly, “There’s just something I need to tell you.” I looked up at him curiously, “The Rob you know isn’t really here anymore. I am different, changed. Erika, I’m dangerous. You shouldn’t be around me. But I love you too much to let you go out of my sight. You mean the world to me; you have always been my best friend. And now that sophomore year is starting, we have so much ahead of us. But…”

“But what?” I asked urgently, pulling myself closer into his body. His warm arms wrapped around my shoulders.

“It wasn’t just coincident that man wanted to kill you. It was because you’re my weakness.” His voice was bitter, angry, “I’m not human. Not anymore.” I could feel myself stiffen in his arms.

“Well than what are you?” I whispered. It didn’t make sense; the world didn’t have anything but humans.

“A werewolf.” I jumped back.

“No you’re not.” I accused, backing away from him. It was pitch black outside, but someone in the nearby apartments would hear me scream.

“Please Erika, calm down,” I realized I was hyperventilating. I forced my breathing to slow, looking away from his intent stare, “Believe me, I didn’t want this to happen. I only left before, because I had to. I went up to the mountains and learned to control this. Now I’m back, and I want you.”

“I’m already in love.” I replied harshly, spinning around, hoping he would let me go this time. He did. I looked back one last time as I walked away, but he was gone.

I got home a few minutes later and grabbed my phone. My fingers flew over the keys, dialing the familiar number.

“Hello.” He answered groggily.

“David, he’s back in town. He came and saved me from a guy and than he told me he loved me and I said I’m already in love, then he left-“

“Wow Erika, stop, stop, look at the clock, can’t we talk tomorrow.”

“David!” I whined his name, I was pretty sure he could hear my tears from across town, for he said, “I’ll be there in the morning.” I set the phone down slowly, staring at the clock. The numbers passed slowly, but I never could sleep. As soon as the numbers hit seven, I was out of my room and into the kitchen. My brother watched me as I grabbed a pop tart, shoved it into the toaster and paced loudly.

A knock at the door was unalarming, but it still sent a shiver down my spine. I pulled it open, flinging myself into David’s arms. David chuckled, lightly untangling himself, “Come on, I’ll take you to breakfast.”

He opened the door to his silver mustang for me. I slid in easily, my mind racing with ways to tell him, “David, he’s back.” I said as soon as the door closed. He nodded, knowing whom I was speaking of. His face flushed red with jealousy.

Then suddenly his car stopped. I peeked out the windshield, confused. David cursed silently, pushing on the gas again. But that car would not start. I took in the fact we were on a back road.

“Erika.” I looked out my window screaming. Rob was standing there, his eyes locked on David.
