"Have you ever heard of the phrase 'it's the little things you do'?"

"Isn't that a song?" I asked immediately putting a chorus to it.

"I'm not talking about that, dimwit. I'm talking about 'random acts of kindness' and 'the golden rule' and that crap. Ruby can't say I'm selfish if I'm selfless."

"Oh, I can see where this is going."

She shot a satisfied smirk in my direction before saying smugly, "Good."

[Two..]

The bell rang twenty seconds later, and without another glance at me.

"Please explain your twisted mind to me," I asked as I struggled to keep up with her fast pace.

She ignored me as usual and continued to walk ahead as she weaved effortlessly through the heavy crowd.

"I want lunch. Do you want lunch? I want lunch."

I grabbed her arm and spun her around to face me.

"A: It's nine in the morning. B: I can't play your game if I don't know how. And C: Why?"

"A: So. B: Ugh! And C: Because." She walked away before I could respond.

"You're evil," I called after her.

She turned and stood so everyone who didn't want to be hit by her flailing arms had to walk around her. Screaming loudly, she cried out, "You loooooooooooooooove it!"

I ignored her and continued walking to my next class alone.

This school was weirder than my last. Not only were the people shallow and stupid, but they all had this ignorant outlook on the world. It was like they had all been brainwashed and never expected to get hurt or ignored.

And then you saw it.

Some random girl crying in the hallway clutching her cell phone or a sheet of notebook paper. Sometimes a friend would have an arm drapped over the girl's sagging shoulders, but for the most part she was invisible with salty tears mixed in with her make up running down her cheeks.

A fight. A glance into someone's soul. A sigh that seemed to come from deep down inside someone. An unfamiliar face that you automatically recognized. And the occassional chance to get a glance of things less intimate with an atmosphere of pure, R-rated l[u]st.

I ducked into one of the many hidden corridors of the school and, at the last second, managed to find my seat in Ms. Regh's room. She smiled ruefully at me before closing the door.

I stared at the board in the front of the room, and for the first time, noticed the boy leaning over Ms. Regh's desk. He stared out over the classroom at the faces who, for the most part, hadn't noticed him.

"Good morning, boys and girls," Ms. Regh said in her voice that demanded attention. Everyone stopped what they were doing and heads turned toward her voice. A few eyes strayed in the direction of the boy before returning to her.

"I'm happy to see that everyone is present. It's always an honor. And now, may I present someone I hope you treat with respect and accept with open arms. Reese Mathis."

Everyone's head cautiously turned in the direction of the boy who was still poised over our teacher's desk. He raised his head slowly to smirk at us.

"Reese," Ms. Reghs said putting a manicured finger on his shoulder, "find a seat and get settled in, ok?"

"Whatever you say," he muttered before stepping from behind her desk and walking slowly down the first aisle.

Without glancing at any faces, he sat in the empty seat in the row closest to the door but furthest from the board. The seat that just so happened to be next to me.

He pulled out a notebook and began to scribble in one of the margins. Without looking up, he asked almost silently, "You're not from around here, are you?"

"How can you tell?" I scoffed in annoyance.

He stopped moving his pen and rested his chin on the back of his hand. Staring at the front of the class, his eyes followed Ms. Regh as she paced back an forward while he twiled his pen. His lips moved slowly as he answered, "You have this dead look in your eyes."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

His head snapped in my direction and, for the first time since I saw him, he smiled a genuine smile as he replied, "I never said it meant anything."

"Are you going to ask what my name is or do I have to assume that you're crazy?"

"Crazy would be nice. I'm somewhat positive that would be a nice change of events for you."

"Then you have obviously never met my best friend, Kennedy Smyth."

"Ah, do tell."

"We should be paying attention to Ms. Regh. There's a test tomorrow."

Both of us glanced at Ms. Regh, still pacing, and somewhat silently laughed to ourselves.

He regained composure before I did and continued softly, "Ah, but I do believe this Kennedy person would be fun to meet."

"Only if you like crazy.."

"Crazy is simply a figment of your over-active imagination."
