Awesome Alice in Wonderland story idea I've had for awhile. Hope you like it.

~**~

She was sure that the cup of tea in front of her was getting cold, but she didn’t care. Or perhaps she did care. Did she or didn’t she? She couldn’t decide. She didn’t really know. All she knew was that the tea in the chipped black and white teacup was untouched and therefore growing cold.

Perhaps she was /supposed/ to care. But she really didn’t.

She sat at that long wooden table in a clearing surrounded by trees. There were many seats surrounding the table, but only herself and two other people were there. Sweets, sugar, bread, butter, teapots, and teacups covered the white cloth draped over the wood. So much food, so much tea, but only three people. And she sat right at the head of the table.

The first girl sat to her left, at least two chairs away. Light brown rabbit ears protruded from the top of her darker brown locks. A puffy brown rabbit tail peered out from the back of her plaid sundress, her brown boots swinging back and forth as she kicked her feet. She was perhaps eleven years of age.

The second girl, maybe nine, sat across from the rabbit girl. Small, round mouse ears the color of wheat were visible through her curly, pale blonde hair. A small mouse tail flicked back and forth behind her. Her own sundress was a creamy white color, her sandals matching the dress.

Both of these two girls drank their tea and chatted about queens and dragons and chess. How they could manage to talk so calmly baffled the girl at the head of the table. But, then again, everything baffled her.

Hattie’s long black eyelashes flickered against her cheeks as she blinked down at her teacup. Her black hair brushed against her shoulders and her green eyes looked lost in thought. Her hands, which were covered in black fingerless gloves, rested in her lap on her black skirt. Her black and white striped leggings hugged her legs and her black and white Converse came up to her knees. The white dress shirt she wore was overlapped with a black vest, a red and black striped tie hanging from her neck. Upon her head sat her favorite black hat. A red heart was on her hat, not to show allegiance to that dämned queen, but to show mockery instead.

Hattie heard the rabbit girl whispering to the mouse. “Do you see that, Minnie? I think Hattie’s lost her wits!”

Minnie gave the rabbit girl a look. “It’s Hattie, Harriett! What did you expect? The girl was born with no wits. Runs in her family.”

Harriett seemed to think for a bit. “Well, maybe she hasn’t lost her wits. I mean, she is a smart girl, but she just makes no sense. There’s a reason some call her mad.”

“Mad is part of her name, you furball!” Minnie scolded. “Don’t be making poor Hattie upset. You know how hard times are on her at the moment.” She glanced over to Hattie and called out sympathetically, “Now don’t be pretending that you can’t hear us. Don’t listen to Harriett. She’s mad herself, that you know.”

“I know,” Hattie responded, her voice soft. Hattie herself was eighteen, much older than the two girls sitting at the table with her. “But it’s alright. I know I am quite mad.”

Minnie just gave her a sad look, so Harriett piped up. “Let’s sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Bat! Come along!” Without waiting for an answer, Harriett sang. “Twinkle twinkle little bat! How I wonder- oh come on Hattie, sing! This was your father’s favorite song!”

At the mention of her father, Hattie started and choked back tears. She squeezed her eyes shut, but nonetheless, a teardrop fell into her cup of tea. “Harriett!” she heard Minnie scold. “What did I tell you not to do?”

“Oops. Hattie, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to…” Suddenly, Harriett’s words trailed off. Hattie looked up to see Harriett and Minnie staring at something next to her. Looking over, Hattie gasped before pressing her hand against her chest.

“I’m sorry, did I scare you? Didn’t mean to.” Another girl of around eighteen was suddenly sitting right next to Hattie. Her long, dark magenta hair with the purple streaks in it was tied up into a high ponytail, a few shorter strands coming down to frame her face. Magenta and purple cat ears flicked on top of her head and a similar-colored tail waved back and forth. She had on magenta Converse, purple leg warmers, a magenta skirt and matching tank that was cropped right near her stomach, and purple fingerless gloves. She was busy helping herself to a slice of cake and tea. “I’ve always been strangely quiet.”

“Chessie,” Hattie breathed, relieved that it was only her friend. “What are you doing here?”

Chessie sniffed. “What, can’t a cat-girl come visit her friends? Honestly, Hattie.” She stirred some sugar into her tea. “And what are you all mopey about, darling? I’ve never seen that sullen of a face from you ever.”

Hattie glanced away and said nothing.

“Oh. So it’s all about that again, eh?” Chessie’s sharp blue eyes bore into Hattie so much that she had to look back at the cat. “I thought we’ve already had this discussion. Must we have it again?”

“My father said that she’d arrive, Chessie!” Hattie blurted. “My father said that she’d be here and she’d save us! But she’s not here! And I don’t understand what you mean by ‘she’s not coming’, either!”

Chessie calmly sipped her tea. “I mean exactly that, Hattie. Your father may have known Alice, but she’s not coming back this time to save us.” Her tail flicked a little faster. “She’s too old to come and save us. And her daughter is much too young to come here in her place.”

“Old? Father says Alice should only be in her twenties! And look at you and I! We’re eighteen! Are we not ‘too old?’”

“The twenties is an old enough age for people from the outside world to stop coming to Wonderland, Hattie. And Alice’s daughter is only two.”

Hattie shook her head, her eyes closing in defeat. “Well someone has to save Wonderland from this new monstrosity! Who’s going to be the new Alice?!”

A small smile flickered onto Chessie’s face. “I think we know the answer to that, Hattie.”

Hattie started and glanced over at Chessie. “We do?”

“Of course.”

“Who?”

Taking another sip of tea, Chessie’s smile grew a bit bigger. “You.”

I was not a fan of the Tim Burton Alice, but it was okay. It had its redeeming points, I just expected it to be like the freaking bomb, and...it wasn't. Johnny Depp, though, was awesome, as always. -sigh-gosh, even with orange hair and ridiculous make-up he still looks gorgeous. It's just not fair.

I like this [: Especially Chessie.
