My little sister, she grins up at me,

And I ask her "What are you gonna be?"

She gestures at her outlandish costume,

"I'm gonna be a fairy!" she squeals,

And I smile for her spirit heals.

.

For this costume she's braided her hair with Mother's fake flowers,

She wears the last Halloween costume, playing for hours,

At the end of her game, she wraps up tight in blankets,

My sister and I, we share hot chocolate,

And she slips a present in my pocket.

.

Now she's ten,

Here she is, she has a pen,

Today she's planned a new career,

Writing's in her future as she plays make-believe,

Through piles of words goes her sieve.

.

Again, now, older - she's thirteen,

Nine years of make-believe she's seen,

Yet still today she's at her play,

Now as a witch she cackles free,

An actor someday she may be.

.

Twenty years old and she's in college now,

I wonder why and I wonder how,

The magic of make-believe has never run off,

Even if it's just all through the month of October,

Somehow my sister is never sober.

.

She has kids and she's still playing,

She won't listen to what I'm saying.

But still, today, the magic of make-believe,

It heals the soul and sets one free,

Even if they know what they'll be.

.

An old lady with a smile,

She will come and play a while,

She's still in love with make-believe,

My little sister's favorite thing,

Even if now she only pretends she's young and not mean.

~

Just a poem I came up with. I do NOT have a younger sister, but when inspiration comes, you better hold tight.
