preface...

When you make a promise, you are required to keep that promise. If you don't, you are no longer honorable. You are disgraced. Untrusted.

But what if you have no choice but to break that promise? What if you cannot control what you have sworn against? Will there be forgiveness?

Maybe. But not always.

chapter one...

"Beth? Beth! Man the port! Are ye deaf?"

I shake out of the daydreamin' that trapped me most of the mornin'. Job to be done, I tell myself. "Aye, Cap'm! just thinkin'..."

"Thinkin' be for ye own time! Man the port guns! The Kaptian's Kurse be comin' about!"

Captian Anne Manderly, with her grande, blond hair, shakes it out of her face and aims the ship toward a near bay.

I hurry o'er to the left, preparin' for a war with our enemies.

"Jesse! Kim!" I yell at two passers. "The crow's nest needs mannin' and I be needin' a port shooter! Please, right away! We be at war with Cap'm Jones!"

The girls murmer there applience and scurry off to help.

A tiny, fragile thing be runnin' at me. Frightened by the yells and cannons, I suppose.

"Beth! Beth! Beth! The cannons! They make loud noises! What's going on?"

Riley, our smallest and newest recruit abored the Tigress Ghost. She be takin' from her family in search of our loot, which we lost on the island we hid it. She ne'er seems to ha'e a problem with joinin' our crew. It was the parley she be worried about.

Our parley be this: To join our sisterhood (and only sisters) ye must swear agianst men.

Plan and simple. Of course there be other less important rules.

Riley be not so sure on our parley, for she always lo'ed fairy tales and wanted a happy endin' of her own with a handsome prince.

"I want ye to go to the bilge and wait 'til I be gettin' ye, aye?"

"Yeah, okay... But the bilge is dark and wet and small and full of icky rats! Can't I please stay here?"

"Nay, lasse. There be a war on our flanks. 'Til ye can man a sword, ye is of no use dead. They be aimin' toword stealin' our ship, not sinkin' it. They be aimin' up here."

"And if they do steal our ship?"

My face be serious now, for it is forbiden to do what I tell her. "Beg for mercy. Ye must stay alive, since ye so young."

"But, that's--"

"Aye, but ye must take vengence on our part... If we were to loose." I wink at the child, who giggles and runs toword the bilges.

"Come on, mateys!" Yells Captian Anne. "Look lively! Jones' comin' about!"

chapter two...

The ship be on the horizon.

Strange. It looks different than the last time I be seein' the Kaptian's Kurse. Their boat be blue-brown, with green swirls at the bilges.

This ship be monsterous, blue-brown still, but red swirls. The red of blood.

I be quickly climbin' the halyards to the crow's nest. In it held a single telescope, a pretty good one, too.

Lookin' over at the other ship, I notice the flag. Simple, but it be sayin' alot.

It be white, as in "mercy, we are not here to fight." with a single, black spot in the middle. A sloppy, terrifying Black Spot that be sendin' a chill through men's spine from 300 yards away. The symbol for those who are marked for dead. If you find one in ye home on a notepad or card... I'd be sleepin' with one eye open.

"Cap'm! Cap'm!" I yell to Anne. She be lookin' up, startled by the urgensy that colored my tone. "Cap'm! It not be Jones! Unown! Flying white!"

Anne be makin' orders I can't hear to the others on the bow. Some of the girls be lowerin' the red flag we put up in the air. Red for no mercy, and no quarters.

They, as well, be raisin' the white one. All three, white, red, and black, have the same picture on them. A Skull and Crossbones with a small red bow and big earings. Girly enough, but with our reputation, it be enough to make sailors turn around with one look at it.
