Whew, sorry about the wait, guys. I didn't mean to keep you all waiting for so long. But here you go, chapter six.

Note: Apparently my definition of gauntlets is different than the dictionary definition. My definition of gauntlets for Lori's weapons are these armbands on her wrists. They look like Wonderwoman's golden armband things, but Lori's are black and are thicker to hold the scythes that pop out.

~**~

Sam carried his giant axe in his hand as he paced around what used to be the spacious gym of the hotel. He looked rather confidant with that axe in hand and that expression of seriousness on his face. Lori just thought he looked stupid. “I want you to look at the weapon you’ve chosen, Lor. Look at it carefully. Are you sure that you want that weapon?”

Lori glanced down at her wrists. Gauntlets were strapped around her wrists, shining black in the dim light. She flicked her wrists and out of the side of them appeared a scythe. It reached from her middle fingertip to her elbow. Armblades, she called them. One scythe on each, pointing away from her. They seemed perfect to her. “Yes, Sam. I’m sure.”

“Positive?”

“Yes, Sam. That’s not the only thing I’m positive about.”

“Ah? What else are you positive about?”

“I’m positive that if we don’t start training, I will kick your äss.”

Sam grunted. “All the best fighters lost because they were too rash, Lori. You need patience.”

“Which is the last thing you of all people have, Sam,” Zack mocked from the sidelines. He sat against the wall with Dylan and Aiden, the usual book in his lap. Lori knew he’d only watch them when the fight began. “Just fight her already.”

“Patience! She can’t be rash.” He started pacing again, the axe slung over his shoulder carelessly. “All the best fighters, Lori. They lost. Because of their lack of patience. Napoleon lost the White House because he was too careless of Abraham Lincoln’s plans.”

Lori’s face scrunched up in utter confusion. “What?”

“George Washington denied his claim to the Roman Empire when Louis XIV sought freedom for the unequal.”

“…Sam, what the hell?”

“And who could forget the gallant efforts Odysseus made when he crossed the Gulf of Mexico to reach El Dorado?”

“Sam! Dammit, everything you’re saying makes no sense!”

“It’s in every history book, Lori. Go look it up.” He stopped pacing and slammed his axe to the ground. “When it comes to war heroes, I’m never wrong.”

“You are wrong, Sam. Everything you just said is 100% wrong.” Aiden was grinning after his small laughing fit from Sam’s so-called speech. “Dude, none of that happened. At all. You got everything completely wrong.”

Sam just stared at Aiden with a blank look. “No. You are wrong good sir.” He glanced at Lori and shook his head. “Next he’s gonna tell me that the capital of Delaware isn’t Narnia.”

Zack let out an exasperated breath of air. “And I thought Dylan was stupid.”

Dylan, after hearing his name, looked up from the Warriors book he was reading. “What? I’m smarter than that!” He pouted at Zack and returned to his book. “Everyone knows the capital of Delaware isn’t Narnia. It’s the Mushroom Kingdom.”

Lori facepalmed. “Dude, can we get to the fighting before the rest of my brain cells die?”

“You’ll be the one to die if you don’t focus on the matter at hand.” Sam gave Lori another serious look. “Choosing a weapon is serious business.”

“Says the guy who chose the giant axe because it looked cool,” Aiden called out from the sidelines.

“Let me teach, dammit!” Sam whined, raising his voice. “You guys never let me do anything!”

Suddenly, Sam’s axe was knocked out of his hand and he was pinned to the ground. Lori hovered over him, one hand clutching his throat, the other arm dangerously close to his forehead. The tip of the scythe slightly grazed his forehead. “Pinned you down. Do I win now?” she asked, bored.

Aiden started laughing again. Zack gave a slow clap, face emotionless. Dylan dropped his book and ran over to them. “Are you ok?” The blonde boy asked.

“I’m fine. She only surprised me,” Sam muttered as he stood back up, running a hand through his black hair and grabbing his axe.

“I wasn’t talking to you!” Dylan pouted, hugging Lori. “I was talking about Lori! You could’ve hurt her!”

“What the hell?! She pinned /me/ down! How the hell could she have gotten hurt?!”

“You could’ve thrown her off! And then she’d slam into a wall and be dead, Sam! Dead!” He clutched Lori’s arm after she retracted the scythes. “Isn’t that right, Lauralie? We can’t have you dead. I’d cry for sure.”

Lori just let out an amused smile and patted Dylan’s head. “Right, Dylan. Who’d keep all of you boys in check? Definitely not another boy.”

“Plus, Lori’s the only one who found out what a prew-louje is.” Dylan ran back over to his book and picked it up. “Now I can read it right! Because prew-louje isn’t anywhere else!”

Aiden stood up and walked over to Lori, holding up her wrist and examining the scythes. “These are a good choice in weapons, Lor.” He smiled at her. “You’ll be a great fighter, I just know it.”

Lori rolled her eyes at him and turned to Zack. “Yo. Have you figured out anything about those shadow creatures Aiden and Dylan fought? I’m really interested in hearing about those.”

Zack blinked steadily and stood up, closing his book. “Follow me,” he said bluntly, leading the way out of the gym and to the lobby of the hotel. The others followed him, Lori sheathing her scythes and walking next to Aiden. Dylan ran over and jumped onto Sam’s back. Sam growled but didn’t say anything else as Dylan got a free piggyback ride to the lobby.

When they got there, Zack sat in an armchair, swinging his legs over one arm like he usually did. Lori threw herself onto a couch, stretching out her legs and yawning. Sam went over to Lori’s couch and dropped Dylan on top of her before he went to sit on another couch with Aiden. Dylan quickly got off of Lori. “Sorry, Lauralie! Sam’s being a stupid meanieface!”

“It’s fine.” Lori watched Dylan settle down next to her on the couch when she moved her legs. “Alright, Zack. I wanna know. What did you find out about these creatures?”

“Last night, while you were all asleep, I wandered the floors of this hotel, hoping to see if anyone left any information about their encounters here.” Zack pulled out a piece of paper from his book and unfolded it, his cadet blue eyes examining the words. “I found a few things. A bit vague, but they’ll help.

“The creature Aiden and Dylan saw was seemingly called a Bastillion. They’re creatures that lurk in the shadows around here, which is why it’s always dark, and they have the ability to actually control shadows. They can manipulate them to where the shadows are solid things that pop out of the ground and can hurt you. We have to be wary about that now. When Dylan shot at it, the bullet bounced off of its skin. Bastillions have very tough skin that is hard to penetrate with just a bullet.

“Another thing: Extremely skilled Bastillions have the ability to turn into humans. I found nothing telling me how we’ll be able to tell who is a Bastillion and who isn’t, so we have to watch out for that as well.”

Sam grunted and crossed his arms. “Are those Bastillion things the only creatures we’ll be seeing?”

“No. But they’re the ones we’re likely to see,” Zack explained. “I’m sure there are other types of demons here, but they’re all hiding as well. It’s a huge city, bigger than any I’ve ever seen. There’s sure to be some surprises.” He looked up at the ceiling. “Bastillions aren’t the weakest type of demons, though. They’re petty high-class. And the Bastillions that can turn into humans are even higher than that.”

Lori narrowed her eyes at Zack as she reached over and took an arrow away from Dylan, who was swinging it around and making airplane noises. “So we’ll have more than just Bastillions to put up with. Just great.”

“Scared, Lauralie?” Sam mocked, giving her a confidant smirk. “Don’t worry. I’ll protect you.” He turned to give Aiden and Zack a look of superiority. “Girls. You always gotta protect them. Since we’re the men of the group, we’ll- holy shït!” Sam immediately shut up as an arrow landed four inches away from his face.

Lori gave him an amused smirk as she held Dylan’s bow in her hands. “Oh, Sam, I’m so sorry,” she mocked. “I didn’t mean to miss.”

Aiden was laughing while Zack gave Lori a look. “Dammit Lori…aim better next time, would you?”

“My bad.” Lori gave Dylan back his bow and leaned back into the couch. “Looks like I need more training, Grand Master Sam.” She stood up and cracked her neck. “Alright. I’m going across the street to see if they have any clothes for me. Who wants to go with me?”

“Girl shopping? Oh, uh, I’ve gotta…go sharpen my axe.” Sam darted off of his couch and ran up the stairs, slamming the door to his room.

Aiden’s emerald eyes grew wide as Lori looked at him. “Uh…would you just look at the time?” He gave a fake yawn and stretched, making his way over to the stairs. “It’s time for my, uh, nap. Yeah, a nap, that’s it.” He walked up the stairs, trying to convince Lori that he really was tired.

Lori raised an eyebrow, her grey eyes traveling over to Zack. He was reading his book again. Instead of running away, all Zack said was, “No.”

Dylan stood up and gave Lori a big smile. “I’ll go with you, Lauralie! None of those Bastillions will attack you while I’m around!”

Lori let out a breath of air, amused. “Thanks, Dylan. Glad I can rely on you.”

~**~

“Too girly, too pink, too revealing…” Lori rummaged through the bargain bin at one of the clothing stores, hoping to find something of her taste. But all she seemed to be finding was stuff that she doubted any girl in the Dark City would wear. “Too cute…ugh, what the hell is all this stuff? /No/ girl in all of this city would so much as touch any of these shirts! This is insane!” She shoved all the shirts to the side, huffing in anger. But pushing the shirts to the side revealed a whole load of more shirts at the bottom.

Lori pulled out a black t-shirt with skulls and roses on it. “Oh, of course. They hide all the good stuff at the bottom.” She put the shirt in the big plastic basket beside her where a few pairs of jeans and two jackets lay.

“Lori! Look what I found!” Lori glanced up from the bin and nearly screamed when she saw what Dylan was holding up. It was a denim miniskirt decorated with butterflies and flowers. “Isn’t it so cute? You should wear it, Lori!”

Lori’s eye twitched as she grabbed the skirt from Dylan and tossed it aside. “Dylan, you sweet, innocent boy. No. Just no.”

“Oh, that’s right. You don’t like skirts.” Dylan blinked, his ocean blue eyes staring down at the skirt. “I’m sorry. It had butterflies on it…she loves butterflies.”

“Who does?” Lori asked absentmindedly as she pulled out a red tank-top with a black rose on the front. “Oh.” She dropped the shirt into the basket and stared over at Dylan with worried grey eyes. “That’s right. Lexi does love butterflies.”

Lexi. She was Aiden’s younger sister, the one in the hospital for the coma. Part of the reason that both Aiden and Dylan were here. Lori knew how much Dylan loved Lexi. Being stuck in the Dark City where he couldn’t see her…it must’ve killed him.

Dylan glanced up at Lori, his eyes sad. “Can…can I confess something to you, Lauralie?”

“Of course.” Lori closed the bin and sat on the lid, staring at Dylan. “What’s up, Dylan?”

Dylan went over and sat next to Lori. “Is it bad…that I don’t want Lexi to wake up yet?”

“What?” Lori blinked rapidly, shocked at Dylan’s question. “Dylan…why wouldn’t you want Lexi to wake up yet?”

Dylan sighed, swinging his legs back and forth as they hung off of the bin. “Because, Lauralie. If Lexi wakes up, then Aiden and I would be free from the Dark City. We’d leave before you, Sam, and Zack. And I don’t want to leave you three here all alone. I’d be so worried. And I know dämn well that Aiden would rather die than leave you here before he left.” He glanced up at the ceiling, his blonde hair falling away from his face. “I love Lexi. I want her to be ok. But…I don’t want her to wake up yet. I want you and Sam and Zack to escape first. That way, when she does wake up, I’ll know that all of you are safe before Aiden and I leave.”

There was a pause. Dylan kept looking up at the ceiling, his eyes creased in worry, while Lori stared at him, shocked at what he had said. Finally, she pulled the blonde teen in for a hug. “Dylan…you’re really brave, did you know that? You’re sitting here, telling me that you hope we leave before you do. You’re not selfish at all for thinking this way, Dylan. You’re brave.”

Dylan’s ocean blue eyes watered up as he tried to hold back tears. “I don’t feel brave, Lauralie. I feel like a coward.”

“You’re not. You’re courageous for all that you’re doing.” Lori ruffled his hair. “And don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. You’re extremely brave, Dylan.”

Dylan gave her a smile. “Thanks, Lauralie. I feel better now.”

Lori nodded and hopped off of the bin, picking up her basket. “Come on, you. Let’s get back to the hotel. I wanna kick Sam’s äss for calling me a weak little girl.”
