I threw open the doors and walked quickly into the police department. I had a huge pink bow in my hair just to make them laugh at me. Let them try.
"Where's Z." I demanded.
"Excuse me miss?" asked the man behind the desk,smiling slightly at my bow.
"Shut your mouth and give me Zackhry." I snarled.
"Oh,the boy who killed Michael Reader?" the man asked surprised.
I slammed my hand down on the desk.
"I'm Hope Elizabeth Reader and my best friend did NOT kill my brother. Let out Z."
"I can't do that in less your going to bail him out." the man shrugged taking a sip of coffee.
"He your boyfriend?"
"Boy do I wish. No,he's just my friend. My best friend."
My mom walked in,looking weary.
"Hope,go home."
"NO!" I shouted,"YOU CAN'T MAKE ME! MOM,THEY TOOK Z!"
"You think I don't know that Hope? He's the only one who could have killed Michael." mom sighed.
"Mom,we live on a street with people who have multiple personality disorder and your trying to tell me that my own best friend killed my brother? Z knew I loved Michael,he wouldn't even consider killing him. Can I see him?" I pleaded turning back to the man. He shrugged and I ran from the room towards the cells not letting him tell me where to go and what to do.

"Z?!" I called,walking down the cold dark concrete cells.
"Baby?" the call was distant,echoing. It didn't sound like it came from the Z I knew.
"Z?" I called,breaking into a run. Fearing the worst.
I felt Z's presence before I saw him. Gasping I saw his snow white face,blaring across the room to me. I ran to the bars and pressed my hands onto Z's cold ones. He tried to smile but I knew he was drained. He had a black eye.
"What happened?" I whispered.
"These idiots in here think I'm racist." Z laughed without smiling.
"Who are they?"
"Black guys."
"Can it snowy." snapped a gravely voice.
"Oh Z." I groaned,pressing my forehead to the cold bars. I felt Z's head against mine.
"It's okay Baby." he said soothingly.
I laughed a little,the tears falling.
"No it's not."
"Come on Baby,take a chill pill. I called my mum and she's bailing me out tomorrow. I'll go home and sleep then we'll talk about the stupid head who killed Michael."
I let my mind believe Z but I knew my heart never could. I couldn't leave him here for the night. He wouldn't sleep out of worry of being killed in here and neither would I.
"I'm paying your bail." I said.
"No."
"Z,shut up. I'm paying your bail."
"You can't! My mum's going to come down here and be worried sick because I'm not here. She'll think I broke out of jail! I already know how,but I just don't feel like it." Z sounded like he was exhausted.
I imagine they had put him through some pretty tough things. I didn't want to think about it. I took out my cell phone were Z and I with our tongue's sticking out came back at me. I showed it to him.
"We'll take more pictures tonight."
"I'll be in here tonight Baby." Z said as if it was obvious.
"Shut up Z." I laughed.
I dialed Z's home phone. His mom answered,her voice strained.
"Oh Hope! I thought it was you." his mom sounded cold.
"I'm sorry about my mother. She's stupid and pointless and I know Z didn't kill Michael. I'm paying Z's bail."
"Hope! I can't let you do that!"
Smiling slightly,I began to argue with Z's mom about why I wanted to pay the bail and why it seemed important to me. Finally his mom gave in. She heard Z auguring with the people in his cell in the background. She began to cry.
"Tell Zack I love him." she choked.
"Z,your mom says's she loves you. Your dad also sends his love."
Z laughed.
"Nice try Baby."
"He said I love you to mum. He didn't say anything wonderful about the father though." I said.
Z's mom laughed and choked at the same time,
"Thank you Hope. He'll be better off at your house tonight. His father will be easier on him tomorrow. Make sure he doesn't come home till nine o'clock. His father will be drunker then a sailor by then and Zack can lock himself in his room."
I said I would do so and we hung up. I slid my phone back into my pocket and slid my thin arms into the cell. Z moved forward and jammed his arms through the bars as well,his being thin,we patted each other's back attempting to give a hug with bars in between us.
"You'll be out in a few. Your mum said to come home at nine tomorrow evening. Your dad will be drunk and you'll lock yourself in your room okay?"
Z pulled a little bit of my hair.
"M'kay."
Pulling my arms through the bars I walked back down hall,ignoring the calls from the other men.

"HOPE ELIZABETH!" my mom yelled.
I shoved Z's bail money at the man behind the desk as mom went into an uproar about how stupid I was acting.
"Your a foolish person! You are to trusting!"
"If anyone was to trusting it was Michael. Z's the only one I trust mom."
"Don't you speak ill of your brother!" mom snapped.
"I'm not!" I cried, "I'm telling you he should have been more careful! I'm telling you I trust Z more then anyone BUT Michael! Don't you see?! I don't trust YOU!"
The man behind the desk went to go fetch Z.
I glared at my silent mother as Z came walking in. I threw my arms around his neck and hugged him close,feeling his warm flesh against mine.
"Oh Z." I sobbed,letting the tears fall for once.
"It's okay Baby. It'll be okay."
"They rushed his life Z." I choked. "He never got to learn!" I sobbed.
"People need to learn to rush. Life is full of possibilities."
"Then you tell me cutting's good?" I choked.
"It helps doesn't it?" Z asked.
"Ya."
"There's your answer."
Learn to rush. Could Michael have learned that? Did the person who killed him know that? I closed my eyes,and they felt hot from the falling tears.
Michael didn't deserved to be rushed.
Why couldn't it have been me? |
