School was heck. Everyone followed,everyone stared,everyone whispered behind their hands. Yet,I didn't care. I really wasn't paying attention to anyone but Z who kept snapping at poor unsuspecting people. Rather funny really.
"Z?" I said as Z scared off yet another little sixth grader.
"Ya?" Z asked turning to look at me.
"Shut up."
Z shut his mouth and took his prey away from me whenever he wanted to snap at them. I didn't care just as long as he wasn't constantly yelling at people right next to me. Summer came up and sat down next to me. Her real name was Ping but everyone called her Summer. Alicia sat up with Z in the row in front of us. Summer rolled her eyes.
"Zack deserves so much better." Summer sighed staring longingly at the back of His head.
I giggled.
"What?" Summer asked me.
"Your telling his best friend he deserves better? Like I didn't know." I said shoving my book bag under my chair.
"Oh,well I think he needs someone who can really understand him,someone who will really care for him."
"Someone like...?"
"You."
"Me?"
"Your name's Hope isn't it? Isn't that what your name means?"
"Summer,that's not the point. I go by Baby anyhow,what does that have to do with my real name? Besides,I don't put any hope or confidence in anyone but-"
"Me and Zack."
"I put some in some other people!" I said defensively.
"Oh really?"
"Really!" I said stamping my foot in frustration.
"Like who?" Summer challenged.
I stared at the back of Z's head as I was lost in thought. Who did I encourage whenever they wanted something REAL bad? Who did I put hope and confidence in whenever they lost all there? Who did I help up out of the most smallest and harder spots ever?
"Michael." I said after a while.
"Ew! That nerdy kid up at the front."
I laughed as I looked at Michael Jamplay bend over his math book,his face a foot from the page.
"Isn't this Science?"
"Ya."
I laughed some more. He was reading a math book in science. A classic.
"I met my little brother Michael. Of course he USED to be my little brother. Some weirdo killed him. The police are on an investigation. Of course it's not that hard. They must live on our street. We have a lot of cooky people up there." I said.
"Ah...ya I heard about that."
We looked up as police entered the room. Alicia and Z broke apart and looked up at the front. Z turned around his seat and looked at me questioningly. I shrugged and he turned back around and I felt a pang of wanting. The policeman was talking to the teacher. I caught a glimpse of his name tag. Officer Freeman.
"Zackhry? Your to go downtown." Officer Freeman said cuffing a confused looking Z.
I jumped up so fast my chair toppled back.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?"
Alicia was frozen in her seat as was the rest of the class. Summer's mouth was slightly open and I had the sudden urge to slap one of them. Didn't they get they were taking my best friend to the slammer?!
"He's suspected for killing Michael Reader."
"That's my best friend!"
"I'm sorry miss-"
"Michael Reader is my little brother! I'm Hope Reader!"
"Well Miss.Hope,he is suspected for the stabbing and killing of Michael-"
"Impossible!" I spat, "Z was with me on the day of the stabbing."
"He obviously stabbed Michael when you weren't around him-"
"When I wasn't with Z,I was with Michael. Someone stabbed Michael whenever I was with Z. DONT YOU DARE SAY Z WOULD HAVE PAIED SOMEONE ELSE TO!"
"I'm sorry Miss,but everyone we suspect has to come downtown."
"No!" I screamed stamping my foot.
I walked over to Freeman and held out my wrists.
"If Z's suspected for killing Michael then I'm an accessory. You take Z,you take me to." I said firmly.
Freeman looked bewildered.
"Miss,I can't suspect you! Your his older sister-"
"Tons of family members have killed other family members! Of course I didn't kill him,some nutter did and I promise you Z is just as sane as you and I. He's also just as clean. There's so many other people and your going to take the one who didn't do it?" I asked pointedly.
Freeman pushed the still cuffed Z in front of him.
"I'm sorry."
I grabbed onto the center of Z's cuffs.
"Hope,let go."
This time Alicia had said it. Her face was chalk white and her eyes had tears in them.
"Oh,so your going to let them take your boyfriend to jail?! Your not going to try and stop them from this in justice?!" I screamed at her.
Freeman gently shoved me away. He and Z were at the door. I spun around.
"You have the wrong person! Z's innocent and god so help me he's going to be out of there tomorrow." with that said I flipped off Office Freeman and sat down watching as he walked out the door with a grinning Z. |
