The beach! The beach was my favorite place to be! I could feel the warm breeze, caressing everything it touched. I dipped my feet in the water, sighing contentedly. The sun was shining, and the warthm was such a change from the forever chill of fall and winter in my homeland. Here, it was always summer. It felt wonderful, and I tingled from the tip of my toes to the top of my head. The beach was the only place I was completely content.

Today was an absolutely glorious day.

But there were things amiss, for in the distance was a ship. I was so self-absorbed I didn't notice, or hear the cries of "Pirates!" I was content, and what whispered to me was my magic. I was the first thing they saw, sitting there perfectly still, eyes closed, my feet in the water, laying back. I was breathing, so they could tell I was alive. No living thing could lay that still unless it was a being of magic.

We knew that some of the magical beings were good. Knowing that we "thought" there were magical beings of good, the pirates thought they were evil, every one of them. I was completely in my mind, listening to my magic so I could make it stronger and control it better.

One of them grabbed me. I felt it. I shrieked, snapping my eyes open as I began to struggle against all of them. Finally, yelling, "I'm sorry!" I used my telekinses to escape. I faintly noticed a white shape jump out of the ship and into the water, swimming towards me. Was it chasing me? I opened up my magic to hear what (s)he was thinking.

'Oh, please, slow down! I need to escape too! I wish I could call out, but I can't get caught! I don't want to go back there! Oh, I wish I wasn't wearing this stupid white dress and didn't have this stupid white hair! The pale skin doesn't help either!' she was thinking. Her thoughts were so rapid I could barely catch them, but I managed.

I slowed down, turned a corner, and hid. I had noticed there were others chasing her. A few seconds later, she rounded that corner. I pulled her down with me, shushing her. The pirates rushed by.

We waited five minutes, then another five, and yet another five. "I think it's safe now," I whispered, peering out from behind the hiding spot I'd picked. Nothing in sight.

We were both covered in brambles and thorns and dirt. "Are you okay?" I asked sympathetically. When she nodded, I turned to brushing everything off.

"My name's Harriet," she told me in a clear voice. Her voice was extremely feminine, I noted.

"I'm Maddison - Maddie," I replied, "What were you doing on a pirate ship, anyway?" I realized this was the exact thing that got me into trouble with Addaly. But I had read her mind, and saw no reason not to distrust her.

"They captured me a few months ago and took me from my home. I had a friend among them, a pirate friend, who first betrayed the crew, and then was FORCED to betray me," she said simply.

"It sounds like the princess, exact time line, too," I commented. A sudden thought occured to me. "Oh, my goodness! Are you Princess Harriet?" She nodded with a wry smile.

"Yes, I am, but please, don't curtsey. I'm not much one for that. You don't look like one either," she commented, noticing my plain t-shirt and black short. "And just call me Harriet."

"Works for me," I answered with a shrug. As we walked back to the beach, we talked. Harriet was so similiar to me! But after this, I'd never see her again. Oh, well, at least I got to meet her.

We walked to the nearest village, and I told everyone what happened. Harriet was going to stay with my family until we had transportation. I wondered if it would be a car or a carrage. That's what happens when your world is a mixture of what was passed and what is now. At least, where those of you reading this live. We've always been like this.

It was only couple of days before a limo came to get Harriet. As she got in, she turned to me, and looked me right in the eyes. "Maddison Acridge, I promise you, I will never forget you," she said, as serious as could be.

"I won't forget you either, Harriet Lail," I replied, with the same seriousness as her.

I know I won't forget her again, but that's life. And life, well, it's filled with lots of joys and some pains.

NOTE: Maddie's world is a mixture of medieval and modern. The only modern things are useful things, such as stoves and cars. There is NO boomboxes, TVs, and computer. No IPods. You get the point. There are SOME modern clothes, but most in Maddie's world perfer medieval - they think it's more comfortable. Just thought I'd let you know.
