-v-Kane-v-

The vampire continued his merry stroll, his carefree attitude filling the air. The light from the moon bathed over him as he rounded a corner, the glass full of blood in his elegant hand. Kane looked forward, noticing another being dive into an alleyway. From a distance it wasn’t obvious, but Kane could tell the man was a vampire as well. It was easy for him to tell due to one simple thing- his senses. It seemed as if all the vampires were on the same frequency, a different one from humans.

Out of curiosity he followed the other vampire, keeping hidden in the shadows as he noticed the other vampire hiding, looking at something- or someone. Looking a bit more carefully Kane noticed the couple smooching, “Oh this should be quite exciting.” He said quietly to himself as he saw the other vampire’s lips move in a quiet whisper, having been around a long time Kane had a lot of spare time. That spare time was put into learning interesting things, such as how to read lips.

“Perfect…” Kane made out as the other vampire approach the couple.

-v-Xaldin-v-

Xaldin walked a few steps before tensing up, it felt as if he was being followed…but not by a human, by a vampire. A more powerful vampire than he himself was. Xaldin turned around slowly, looking for the mysterious being, but could see no one. All of a sudden a glimmer caught his eye, he noticed a glass, and holding the glass was the vampire.

Xaldin stood still for a few seconds, staring right at Kane before seeing Kane raise his glass in a ‘hi’ fashion before proceeding to point at the couple as if to say ‘if you take too long, you’re going to lose them.’

Xaldin looked curiously at the new vampire, he was awfully cheery… ‘Probably drank a human’s blood that had alcohol in it…’ he thought. Xaldin continued the approach before he was right behind the couple; he reached out his hand and tapped the guy on the shoulder.

“What do you want?” The man snapped, clearly not pleased with being interrupted, “Can’t you see I’m busy?”

“Forgive me, but I’m hungry,” Xaldin bowed slightly as if asking for forgiveness.

“So? You want money you homeless b.um? If you would spend more money on food then on your clothes you wouldn’t have to beg people on the street for food money,” He glared at Xaldin. Xaldin just stood up straight again and let out a laugh.

“No, no, I don’t want money for food you stupid human,” Through his laughter his fangs glinted in the moonlight, the man and woman both seeing this detail, “How’d Dracula say it? Oh right, I vant to suck your blood.”

The vampire continued to laugh while the couple scrambled to get away; they ran a few feet only to see a puff of gray smoke as Xaldin reappeared in front of them. He grabbed the closest human- the man- and quickly held him so that he could bite down. Without a moment’s hesitation Xaldin felt his fangs sink into the man’s soft skin. The fresh blood filled his mouth as let the sweet taste of the fluid roll over his taste buds before swallowing each gulp. The man soon went limp in his arms, the woman watched in horror before turning and running as fast as her legs could carry her.

“Boo!” Kane had jumped out of the shadows as the woman passed, the woman screamed and hit Kane in the stomach- running as fast as she could around him. Kane didn't stop her, still content from his previous meal, and instead laughed at the reaction he had received.

“You are?” Xaldin dropped the body and approached the stranger.

“Kane, at your service,” Kane bowed lowly, grinning before standing again, “May I have the honor to know what they call you?”

“Xaldin, the pleasure is mine,” Xaldin answered.

“Oh no, no, no, the pleasure is mine, young Xaldin,” Kane smiled brightly at the guy.

“I’m not young! I’m almost 150 years old!” Xaldin stomped his foot in protest- only making him seem more childish.

“I am 350 years old, anyway, you were bitten when you were twenty I see,” Kane put his thumb on his chin in thought, looking at the other vampire. Once bitten by a vampire, the victim stops growing for eternity. Leaving quite a few children as vampires, some stuck in puberty, others stuck as toddlers.

“And you were what, thirty?” Xaldin guessed, surprised at how accurate Kane’s estimation was, he was technically twenty four when he was bitten. But he decided to give Kane the credit for it.

“Thirty-two my silly little companion,” Kane chuckled, ruffling Xaldin’s hair.

“What the he.ll? I was two years off! Give me credit for being somewhat close! And what the he.ll do you mean by companion?” Xaldin looked at Kane, “What are you? Drunk?”

“Probably,” Kane smiled simply.

-|-|-Kobi-|-|-

Kobi wiped sweat from his brow as he finished mopping the floor of the restaurant, the restaurant had closed half-an-hour ago and he was the only one left in the building. With a sigh he put the mop back in the bucket he had been using and put it back in the janitor’s closet. He looked around at the restaurant, it wasn’t much, the food wasn’t that good, the place wasn’t exactly beautiful, ‘but beggars can’t be choosers I guess,’ Kobi thought as he grabbed two take-home boxes that had food in them. It was probably going to be his dinner tonight and his breakfast the next day.

Kobi opened the door to the restaurant skillfully holding the two boxes in one hand as he used his other to turn off the lights in the restaurant before exiting the building and locking it up. With both his hands free once the door was shut tightly, “Not that anyone in their right minds would try to rob the place,” he commented, he was able to carry the food with ease.

The boy walked about ten minutes of his twenty-five minute walk home (he didn’t have and couldn’t afford a car) before he heard screaming and noticed two men talking in the alleyway next to him. If Kobi hadn’t been exhausted he would have thought more rationally: if a woman is screaming and there’s a dead body on the ground, something wasn’t right.

But he was exhausted and wasn’t thinking rationally. The boy kept his steady pace, more than ready to go home, eat, and get some much needed shut-eye so he could go through the exact same process the next day.

-|-|-Emma-|-|-

Emma continued her walk home; she was about ten minutes away and enjoyed the fresh night air. There was one thing that bothered her, however. It was Ricki’s comments about the disappearances. She had actually read in the paper an article or two about the strange vanishings, but never paid close attention. The more she thought about it though, the more curious she got.

Deep in thought Emma walked another few yards before she was bumped into by a frantic woman. The woman screamed something about ‘vampires’ and ‘they drank his blood.’ Emma raised an eyebrow as her eyes followed the woman as she vanished down the road.

“I’ve never seen anyone run that fast,” Emma mumbled before looking into the alley in which the woman had run from. The girl had never been one for self-preservation.

Peering into the alleyway a few things caught her eye:

1. The dead body.

2. The apparently pi.ssed off guy yelling at the cooler looking guy.

3. Blood. On the ground.

The blood was all Emma needed as she covered her mouth, trying desperately not to throw up. She gagged a little before successfully keeping her dinner down. She looked over to see if she had caught the attention of the guys, and she had. The two stopped in the middle of their discussion to look over at the new girl. Emma tried to avert her eyes from all traces of blood, but it was impossible- one had it in a glass, one had it on his shirt, the corpse had it on its body, it wasn’t a great place for a person with hemophobia.

“Uh, hi, I, uh, suppose you are the vampires that crazy lady was ranting about,” Emma backed up a little from the two who had been slowly approaching the girl, “But you guys aren’t vampires right? I mean, they don’t exist.”

“Oh, is that what you think?” Xaldin said in a smooth voice, he pointed to his fangs, “These and the holes in the dead guy’s neck say differently.”

“But…there’s no such thing,” Emma spoke slowly, looking at Xaldin.

“Well, seeing as Xaldy here and I are vampires, we have to respond with, yes, there is such thing,” Kane smiled cheerfully with a laugh, “My name is Kane. And who may I ask are you, lovely lady?” Kane took her hand and kissed it gently, holding it for a couple of seconds before releasing.

Emma took her hand back slowly, looking at Kane with a raised eyebrow, “The name’s Emma, and I assume the other guy is Xaldy?”

“Xaldin,” Xaldin interrupted- a little unnerved at the guy’s nickname for him.

“So you have a pet name, huh?” Emma put a hand on her hip, “At first I didn’t believe in vampires, now there are two vampires in front of me, and what more, they’re g.ay.”

“I’m not g.ay!” Xaldin said quickly, the vampire pointed to Kane, “He probably is, but I’m not! I like women too much to be g.ay!”

“Riiiight,” Emma said- she actually did believe the poor, flustered vampire, but pushing buttons was just one of the things she liked to do, “Wait a minute, why am I not more terrified? You guys probably want to suck my blood or something!” Emma backed up, her hand protectively on her throat.

“We both just ate,” Xaldin replied bluntly.

“And now we’re full and tired,” Kane yawned for effect before taking a sip from his glass; Emma couldn’t hide her shudder as she looked away, “But we have a problem that maybe you can fix, dear Emma.”

“Oh really?” Emma raised her eyebrow and crossed her arms.

“Really. See, my friend here and I don’t have a solid home, being vampires we have to stay quite aloof and can’t settle down for a more than a few nights, but tonight we have you here,” Kane gave Emma a begging look, “Would you be so kind as to let us live with you for the time-being?”

“WHAT?!” Emma and Xaldin exclaimed.

“Yes, I promise that if I get any hunger urges to immediately leave the comfort of your home and come back only after completely filled, as does Xaldin,” Kane pressed.

“What makes you think I want to stay with a human?” Xaldin snapped at Kane.

“A warm bed and TV of course,” Kane said as if it was as easy as two plus two.

“Well,” Emma thought, looking at the pleading vampire, “I really have to get my head checked…okay. You two can stay with me. But the first sign of either of you trying to eat me, you’re gonna be kicked out into the night or sun depending. Got it?”

“Oh yes our dear new friend! Xaldin and I will dispose of this meddlesome body and we’ll meet you back at you’re apartment!”

“Okay, see you- wait a minute, how do you know where I live?”

“Silly, you walk past here every night, and when I’ve gotten bored I’ve tagged along.”

“You were STALKING me?!”

“Not ‘stalking’ more like ‘conveniently taking the same path as’ you, anyway, that’s neither here nor there, we’ll see you in about fifteen minutes, tah tah,” and with that, Kane waved her off as he and Xaldin started to go through the process of getting rid of the body.

“Dam.mit, Emma, what have you gotten yourself into this time,” Emma sighed to herself as she returned to her journey back home.
