I watched him walk towards me, a small smirk on those perfect lips. My heart sank as his arms wrapped around my shoulders, for I knew what I had to do. He had always been mine, but then, I met a new someone to call my own.

“I have to talk to you.” I whispered, not daring to let my voice crack. He immediately pulled me away from his warm body, lifting my chin up with his forefinger. I forced myself to look at him, although the pain as unbearable.

“Why do you look like your going to cry?” He asked me, his touch suddenly gentle. I could feel my head grow hot, my eyes water.

“There’s something I have to do.” I spoke slowly, not willing to let myself break into a sob that I so desired. His eyes bore into mine, the soft brown color looking as innocent as ever. I mentally noted the way the sunlight made a gentle rainbow of colors, then cursed myself for remembering the good times I’ve had with him.

“Please, pour your heart out. You know I care about you.” I choked back a sob.

And that’s the worst part.” I could hear my voice dying, right along side my heart. His eyes gave away the worry he tried to hide.

“I don’t understand.” I looked away from him, the way his lips pouted caused a small bubble of protection to pop. A lump developed in the back of my throat; making each word I spoke more difficult then it needed to be.

I looked around him, trying to distract myself from the tears. We had met in a park; it was late now, the sun falling lower behind the distant mountains.

“Jaime.” He spoke my name so softly I almost did not hear it, “Please.”

“I can’t do this.” My courage suddenly sprouted as Conner drove into the parking lot. He knew I was breaking it off with Dylan.

“Do what?” Dylan was oblivious, but I know he knew, inside. I shook my head, hiding my face in his white cotton t-shirt, “Jamie?” He held me close, tightening my body into his.

A sharp cough made him drop his arms. I looked behind me to see Conner, eyes hard with anger. I walked into Conner’s open arms, letting my tears stain his shirt instead.

“I’m sorry Dylan, but she’s mine now.” The way Conner said this he not quite didn’t sound sorry. I took a quick glance at Dylan’s shocked face. It was painful to see him like that.

“Jamie, let’s go.” Conner lifted me into his arms-bridal style-carrying me to his car, “It’s all for the best.”
