Sorry about the wait, with numerous school productions, dance shows and revision for upcoming exams I just haven't had a chance to write anything....but now the wait is over. Enjoy!

In front of where Alex was standing was a fairly small birch door, mahogany in colour and with a large brass handle at its centre. The hall was silent, until-

“Well are we going to just STAND HERE?!” Rose asked excitedly as she stepped purposely forwards and knocked twice on the door. As soon as her knuckles had disconnected from the wood, a whisper shivered to their ears.

“State your name clearly....” The voice was vaguely familiar...

Alex stepped forward at this, resting his hand on the small of Rose’s back. “Alex Patterson, Rose Weasley, Darcy Franklin, Albus Potter and Morgan Byrd.” The silence that followed was complete; even the creaks of floorboards echoed through the corridor as though amplified through a megaphone.

Just as Darcy was saying “Well maybe we needed to be more detailed when you said our names,” the door opened slowly, silently and completely unaided to reveal a small flight of stone spiralling steps leading upwards. Everyone was silent, looking at the open door.

“Well,” I said finally stepping forward and placing my foot on the first step, “are we going to stand here looking like trolls?” Rose grinned at me and grabbed Darcy by the hand and the three of us led the way up the stone steps, followed closely by the two boys. All sound felt as if it had been sucked from the air as we reached the top of the steps to find yet another door made from the same mahogany coloured birch wood. Reaching it first, I reached out my hand to grasp the perfectly round door handle. As my fingertips brushed against the polished bronze, a curious sensation trickled up my arm, quite like putting your hand in hot water when it’s cold. Immediately after this strange feeling, the door slowly swung open to reveal the connecting room.

I caught my breath.

The ceiling, stretching up high above us, was encrusted with thousands upon thousands of enormous shimmering icicles, glinting slightly in the low lights coming from the vast dance floor that occupied almost half of the room. Through the gloom of the darkened room, I could make out a mass of bodies silhouetted on the dance floor, almost pulsating to the beat of the music blasting out from an unknown source somewhere above our heads whilst many others scattered the outskirts in large clumps, conversing in a jumble of inaudible murmurs.

“James turned up good on this one!” Alex yelled over the music, gazing around us at the decorations. “Not just a pretty face!” I turned to him, frowning.

“What, James did all of this?” I asked. Alex smiled.

“Why d’you think he wasn’t in his classes today? Took him all day to do this,” he replied, before grinning at something or someone just behind me. “Nice one J; it looks awesome!” I turned sharply to face him. There, as if he’d just apparrated in front of us, stood James Potter, a goblet in one hand and had an annoyingly sexy smirk playing around his lips.

“You like it then?” he asked, glancing at the group at large before focusing on me. The butterflies in my stomach got a little more excited as he looked at me, but I fought them back.

“It’s alright,” I replied off-handedly as i glanced around, unable – to my annoyance – to keep the impressed look from my face. James laughed.

“Oh, I see!” I glared at him. Rose and Darcy glanced at each other.

“Wanna go dance Mo?” Darcy asked, grabbing Al’s hand; a deep blush was noticeable on his face even in the gloom.

“So the broomstick wasn’t able to get in then?” James’ jibe raised my eyebrows with amusement.

“I’ll be there in a minute Darcy” I said to her, giving a reassuring smile to the two girls. Rose shook her head before grabbing Alex and leading the way onto the dance floor leaving me alone with James.

“No, he didn’t try because I didn’t tell him,” I replied, applying an icy hostility as a group of girls sidled past us who looked suspiciously like a few Potters Parade minions of Elouise Lambert’s, evidently sent to spy on James. They were no doubt trying to find Elouise to snitch on our conversation. I turned to them with folded arms as they dawdled.

“I’m sorry, can I help you?” I asked with just a hint of menace in my voice, causing the girls to jump in surprise at their discovery and scuttle off in a nervous huddle.

“Can’t stand eavesdroppers, can you?” I added turning back to him. He had a bemused look on his face. “What?”

“Why didn’t you tell Tom about the party?” he asked; he still looked bemused. I sighed exasperatedly.

“God, I don’t need him on my back 24/7; I’m an independent woman, my mind can function perfectly well of it’s own accord, thank you very much!” He grinned at me, eyebrows raised.

“I bet you can,” he replied sarcastically.

“Oh you’d be surprised,” I shot back at him.

“Prove it.” I faltered.

“Excuse me?” James’ smile grew wider.

“Prove it...to me...then.” he elaborated pathetically.

“Erm, and how am I supposed to do that, precisely?” I asked, stumped. His eyes twinkled mischievously.

“Shouldn’t your oh so independent brain know the answer to that?” The innuendo was very subtle, but it got my heart racing like I’d just run a marathon.

“A challenge?” I queried, cocking my head to one side, the corners of my mouth twitching skywards. James pulled a unconcerned face.

“Maybe,” he replied matter-of-factly. “Why, won’t you rise to it?” The twinkle shone ever brighter in his eyes. A breathy laugh escaped my lips as I started as if to walk past him, only to stop a mere few inches away from his torso which was concealed by a pale blue shirt.

“I think you’ll find,” I said so softly that only he could hear, “that that my independent mind copes with challenges ever so well.” James smirked.

“We’ll see,” he replied back just as softly, looking into my eyes.

“We certainly will,” I said as, right on cue, Rose came shuffling through the crowd and grabbed my hand.

“There you are, c’mon! Darcy and Al have completely disappeared and you said you were just coming!” I smiled at her.

“Coming,” I said, giving James a casual flicker of the eyebrows before allowing Rose to drag me into the middle of the dance floor.

“Nice ignoring technique,” she said loudly against the blasting noise of s Ten Goblins song that was pounding a steady beat in my ears. I pulled a look of mock confusion.

“I don’t know what you mean, Rose,” I replied, whilst still being very aware of James’ gaze on me as he was surrounded by his friends. “Anyway, I have a boyfriend who adores me, so stop your friendly worrying and dance with me!”

Just as I said this the the Ten Goblins song finished and was replaced by a much faster and wilder tune which quickly coaxed more and more people onto the dance floor.

And all the while James Potter continued to watch me with the most confusing look on his face.

I loved it.

But James can really annoy me and Albus seems just so shy and cute...

Challenge?

Hmmm...I'll have to think about that one.

Keep me updated, love.
