Chapter 36 - Last Night On Earth

Storm sighed, fishing her waterproof mascara out of the bottom of her makeup bag. She was speaking absentmindedly. “Annie was an angel, and I imagine as God called her home…no, that sounds weird.”

Lucien looked over. “Do I want to know what you’re doing?”

“My mom told me that Annie asked if I could speak at her funeral.”

He raised an eyebrow. “What?”

“She said that Annie realized she was dying and that she wouldn’t be able to see me and wanted me to know that she’s sorry.”

“Sounds like Annie was wise beyond her years.”

She sighed. “She was. Did you ever hear that term - an old soul in a young body? That was her. She wasn’t your typical sixteen year old.” She sniffled. “I already miss her.”

Lucien smiled. “What you had earlier about her being an angel was nice.”

She smirked. “Not really. It would sound bizarre coming from me. I’m not even slightly religious.”

He laughed. “Well, this ought to be interesting.”

She glared at him. “Shut up. I need to think of something nice.”

“What was she like to you?”

“She was amazing,” Storm said sadly. “She idolized me. Even when I did stupid things - like the time I had been partying the night before I went to see her and I was wearing a sweatshirt and sunglasses and a hat, and could barely speak in coherent sentences.”

He laughed. “Wow. What did she say?”

“She laughed. She said everyone screws up sometimes and that it was kind of funny to see me so far off. She was amazing.

“She was patient and intelligent and she was pretty. Strawberry blonde hair and big, sparkly blue eyes. I meant what I said - Annie was one of God’s angels.”

Lucien grinned. “There. That was brilliant. That’s what you should say.”

Storm sighed, putting on her mascara. “I just don’t want it to be really cheesy.”

“It won’t be cheesy if it’s from the heart, you know.”

She sighed. “I guess.” She stood up. “Let’s go. We have a long drive ahead of us.”
