I couldn’t believe it, but it was the sorry truth. We were moving again.

The last time we had move my mother broke two candle sticks and a DVD player in all her stress. The time before that it was even worse. Maybe I was hoping we would strike lucky this time, but I was sadly mistaken. Mom was in the middle of vacuuming and thankfully nothing had really gone wrong just yet. I was starting to think this move would be different. Well, just as if Ares had read my mind, our vacuum cleaner stopped working. There was a smell of burning rubber all around the house. Now this was a mess. That’s when mom calls, “Jessica! Go ask if we can borrow Miss Laura’s vacuum cleaner!” Now this lady is the most grumpy, single woman on our block. She’s sixty years old, and she seems to get the most enjoyment out of ruining my life. I don’t know how I survive with this lady around. I guess one perk of the move is never having to see her again. Well, here I come down the street, and she is already waiting for me, looking out of her gothic style window. Oh, did I forget to mention that her whole house looks like a medieval church. That look is great when it comes to churches, because, well, it was just made for them, but not for a little condo on a street corner. She also has these black curtains that make it look even more sinister.

I walked up to the house and rang the doorbell. She seemed to take the longest time getting to the door, like she was pretending she hadn’t been watching me walk up the street. “ Hey, can we borrow your vaccum?” I said. She answered, “ And why would you want to do that? I’m sure you’re going to commit some kind of crime. Such a delinquent.” She mumbled. She had made it just loud enough for me to hear. Now I really loathed my mom for this. This would be an experience I would spend the rest of my life trying to forget, I was sure of it.

“No, Miss Laura. I’m not going to commit any crimes with your vacuum cleaner.” I said through clenched teeth. As if I could commit a crime with that anyway. “Well, I can never trust someone who’s been in jail with such a valuable item as my vacuum.” said Miss Laura. “I have never been in jail,” I said. “Oh, well I’m sure you will be.” She replied. Of course she had some kind of insult for everything I say. “Well, for the sake of your poor mother, I will lend it to you,” she finally said.

She disappeared down a long corridor, and after about ten minutes she finally showed up with the vacuum. It ended up being this old sixties cleaner that looked like it hadn’t been used in a long time. Then Miss Laura says, “ I cannot lend you any of my finer vacuums. You might break them. Bring this back as soon as you are done with it.” She said all of this quite curtly, and then she slammed the door in my face without even so much as a goodbye. Thank goodness that was over.
