The wintry flecks of crystal shed like dandruff from the sky. City snow wasn't nearly as pretty as it could be. Janelle, bundled against the frost, hurried into her office building, which loomed over the street, casting the crowd in a frozen blanket of a shadow. She shook off the wet from her coat, and walked over to the elevator. She looked alone, but she was thinking of someone, and just the thought of him filled her heart with togetherness. It was bitter, and sometimes this lingering thought made her feel more alone, but today it was working. She could almost hear him laughing, and telling her that her gray work dress blended in with the smog filled sky on days like this.

She made her slow procession to her floor, and breezed through the familiar maze of desks and cubicles till she found the desk she shared with another intern. There was the usual pile of morning papers on her desk.

*Dear Nick,

Be glad you left three days ago. The snow hit, and we are cold and miserable here. I know you haven't been gone that long, but that thought makes me realize how much longer you'll be away from me.*

"Janelle, where's Nick, eh? I haven't seen him in a while." Janelle sighed. And tried to look strong as she turned to the cubicle inhabitant next to her. Sarah, Janelle thought.

"He left. Three days ago." Sarah looked at her with shock, and quickly tried to hide it.

"Oh. Well, I should have known. He always walks you up here, doesn't he?" She realized she said the wrong thing in an instant, for Janelle started to cry a bit.

"No, it's just...just me right now." Sarah sat down. Janelle started her work, filling out forms, arranging meetings for her boss, morning things. Soon, it was close to noon, and she was getting ready to go buy herself a sandwich.

"Janelle Evans?" A scrawny mail man appeared at her cubicle door, and she nodded to him.

"That's me." He handed her some envelopes, and she set them down unceremoniously. The mail man stayed in the doorway awkwardly, and finally spoke up after a minuet or so.

"You-well, you might want to open that top one. Just a suggestion." And he left. She looked at her small pile. A pink envelope was on top, and it had no return address. Just her work address. She took it, and recognized the handwriting right way. She ripped the top open, and pulled out some pale pink stationary.

"Janelle,

I'm sorry I am going to leave you.Or left, as you won't get this till after I do. I know I am, because it must be as hard on you as it is on me.

I just wanted you to know how much I love you. In fact, I loved you from the first time our eyes met. I loved you more from the first time our hands touched. I loved you even more from the first moment our lips touched. And come spring, we can be together again. I promise, we'll hold hands down the park all over again. You have my word. It's been hardly three days, and I know I miss your embrace. And the way my hair tickles your forehead when we kiss. It's really only a few days till we can see each other again, really. But I hope that you keep this close to you when I'm gone, and let my words give you my love for me.

I know we are so far, but I swear, when I get back every inch of your skin will be kissed.

And Janelle, I am stationed in a good part of Iraq, I'm mostly protection for the people. I hope you aren't worrying too much.

With eternal love, from the first time to the last breath,

Nick.

PS---Will you Marry Me?"

Janelle clutched the letter to her chest, and cried openly. Her answer was formed in her mind the second she knew. She sat and cried, and laughed, but then Sarah came in.

"You read it? Good. I'm supposed to give you this." She handed Janelle a box, and in it was the ring. It was small, but it was true and she knew he picked it just for her. She put it on instantly.

"I love you Nick, and yes, I will." She whispered this to herself over and over for the rest of the day.

Nick was pronounced MIA two months later.
