Francine: Love is a Kind of Craziness

It was a beautiful Saturday morning. I was out at McDonalds for some breakfast, since I couldn’t be bothered making my own. My phone rang. Beep. Beep. “Hello?” I said. “Hi, Francine, it’s Tom,” Tom said. “Tom?” I said. “What are you calling me for?” I asked. “You’ll know,” he said. “Where are you?” I asked. “Guess,” he replied cheekily. “Where are you?” I demanded. “McDonalds. Take a look around,” Tom answered. I looked around. “I can’t find you,” I said. “I’m in the toilet,” he laughed. “Tom!” I said. “I’m coming out,” he said. I disconnected my phone and Tom came out of the rest room. “Tah-dah!” he called. I giggled. “You’re a weirdo, Tom,” I said. “Get me a straw; I want some of your Coke.” I stood up and walked to where you can get straws and tissues from. I reached out for a straw only to be touched by another hand. “Oops, sorry,” I looked at whoever the hand belonged to. Jack Harbridge. “Oh, hey France,” he said. “Hi,” I said. I took one straw and started to walk away, embarrassed. “He is so cute,” I whispered to Tom. “Don’t be stupid. Yesterday, at soccer practice, he hogged the ball. And you know what? He’s dad, you know, Coach Harbridge, he didn’t even stop him,” he retorted. I looked back to where Tom was eating breakfast with his dad. He smiled at me. I shyly smiled back and looked to Tom. “He smiled at me,” I said. “Do you know what his record is of how many girls he went out for a week?” Tom asked. “No, what?” I said. “Eight. And he’s even proud of it,” Tom shook his head. “Oh, guess what too,” Tom asked again. “If it’s something bad about Jack, I ain’t listening,” I responded. “No, it’s not,” he said. “Okay, what gives,” I said. “It’s Annie’s and my second month-anniversary,” he said. “Really?” I asked. “Awesome!” I gave him a high-five. “Yep, that was why I was here. To buy her favorite burger. We’re meeting in an hour here. Wanna join us?” he said. “No, thanks, I’m studying over at Penelope’s today,” I said. “Better go now,” I say. “Okay, want me to take you home?” he asked. “I’ll be right,” I said. I hugged him. He was one of my best friends, Tom is. “See ya,” I said. “Bye,” he waved. I walked away out of McDonalds. I heard someone running behind me and say my name. “Tom?” I cried, turning around. No. It was Jack!
