"When we recall Christmas past, we usually find that the simplest things - not the great occasions - give off the greatest glow of happiness."

~ Bob Hope

**

There's nothing scarier than seeing your dad hooked up to countless tubes and needles. Seeing his face paler and older-looking everyday. Knowing that his days are numbered, and hope is running low. Having to face the fact that he'll never see you walk down the aisle, or graduate from high school, or have a family.

Everyday I come home from school, hoping to see my father in his favorite recliner, and sipping his coffe. I want to hear him say, "Hey, sugarbear. How was school?". I miss the comforting smell of his cologne when he leaned over me to kiss me goodnight. If I had three wishes, they'd all be spent on my father.

When I was a little girl, no older then five or six, my dad would point out a star to me. He'd say, "See that star, Maia? That star is watching over you. Whenever I'm not with you, find that star and I'll be here." Now, at nights, sometimes I'll look for that star and wish for my daddy to come home.

Too bad wishes only come true in fairy tales.

A couple years ago, when I was eleven, my father was diagnosed with cancer. For the next year and a couple months, he went through major chemotherapy. He got better, and everyone thought he was cured. But then two years ago, it showed up again. Worse this time. My father's health dropped slowly, and it never got better. The doctors have tried everything, but the cancer blows it off. Now, the doctors have given up, and announced that he's got only two months left. He'll die by Christmas Day.

My family's funds have been dropping too. The medical bills keep getting higher, and with my mom as a daycare owner, there's not much money coming back in. We're in serious debt, and we're having trouble paying the bills. My little brother, Chris, and I haven't gotten new clothes in months. We only have enough food for meals, and both my brother and I are on reduced lunch at school.

I'm Maia Williams, a 16-year old sophomore at South Cliff High School. I live in a tiny town in northeastern Oregon that goes by Mosewick, with a population of 20,000. I've never had a boyfriend, and I've got one friend, Devin. He's been with me through everything, and I don't know what I'd do without him. My house is on the small side, with three bedrooms and one and a half bathrooms.

I'm just an average teenage girl, who's lost hope in everything.
