I was at the beach. My favorite place. It was the chilly beach of my quarter, the Winter quarter, but it was still a beach. I was staring into the waters on a shelf of land I had managed to claim after wading out into the ocean. The water was chilly here, not the peaceful warmth of the Summer quarter beach.

It was still peaceful, just a peaceful chill. There were lots of interesting things in the water, for it was cold, and I could find things that weren't there in the Summer quarter. I pulled my white and black jacket tighter around my shoulders. All of a sudden, a mermaid shot out of the water, scrambling on the rock, laying on her back with her tail lifted.

I was soaked. "Um, can I help you...?" I asked akwardly, shivering. She shifted to a more comfortable position, the tip of her tail lightly dipped in the water.

"I'm so sorry, I forgot land-beings got chilled easily. My name's Ahna," she apologized. I glanced at her. She had dark red hair - auburn - and the typical bright green ear flaps of the merfolk. They could adjust their hearing with them. She had a bright blue top, very decorated, so she was high in status. Her tail was a deep, vibrant blue-green, rather pretty.

"Okay... I'm Maddison - Maddie - and... um... And why would you need me... And come in such an odd manner...?" What an awkward moment! Well, for me - Ahna seemed to be fine.

"I was being chased," Ahna explained.

"Why?" I asked.

"It's the reason I need you. A bunch of hali-sharks have invaded our land, and you have telekineses, and you can get rid of them with your mind... I brought something for you to breathe with... Please help us!" Ahna's continued explanation was very confusing. But there's one thing I knew.

I hate halis. Hali-beings were mutated animals of magic. They combined animal intellegence, human intellegence, and magical intellegence and where ruthless. Every hali was evil. All of them were extremely smart. They were scary, too, you can't forget that. They thrived on darkness and fear, and... Oh, I hate them!

"I hate halis," I answered.

"What being doesn't? That is why we need your help. Please, Maddison?" Ahna complained.

I took a deep breath. "Fine. Where's the thing to help me breath at?" I asked.

"Right here." Ahna handed me a simple bracelet. I slipped it on, took my jacket off and laid it on the highest part of the sand-colored rock, then dove in. I was able to see, and able to breathe, and I wasn't cold.

'This bracelet works wonders,' I thought. Ahna laughed. "You accidently projected her thought," she explained, "And those bracelets are everywhere where we live."

"Sorry, I project thoughts when I'm enthralled with something." I gave her an apologetic look. Cool, it even let me speak underwater! Ahna laughed again.

"Well, come on, we've got halis to get rid of," Ahna exclaimed, shooting off.

"Hey! I can't swim as fast as you!" I said, following her. This would have beeen an almost enjoyable experience if it wasn't for the halis. Ahna slowed down.

"Sorry, but I want to get rid of them as soon as possible," she explained.

"Who doesn't?" I told her. We both grinned.

That was when we saw the hali-shark.

"SWIM!" Ahna shrieked, darting off.

My best chance was to hide, there was no way I'd be faster than this thing. Of course, the hali-shark followed me, being as I was the slower prey. It caught up way too quickly, and lunged at me. I kicked it in the nose, causing it to fall back wiith this horrible, ear-burning, unearthly screech. It was unearthreal. I slammed my hands over my ears, kicking to the surface. It stopped. I turned around and saw Ahna had gotten on the back of it, and stuck her hand in a hole on the top of it's head.

"Get rid of it!" she shouted at me.

"Get off of it!" I answered. She did. Using my telekinses, I threw it against rocks on the ocean floor repeatedly. When it finally stopped thrashing, I stopped whacking. Exhausted, I stopped kicking, falling to the ocean floor. Everything went black.

.

I woke up. I heard voices.

"Will she be okay?" My mother's. I didn't feel wet, so I must have been on land.

"She just exhausted her powers, she'll be fine," somebody else soothed. Ahna.

I opened my eyes. I was on the shore of the beach, my mom staring at me worriedly.

"Hi, Mama," I whispered.

Ahna was shocked. "Nobody has ever recovered that quickly from using up their powers," she exclaimed softly. My mother nodded.

Before I could ask, she said, "This mermaid just got you up here."

"So only a minute or two?" I asked, sitting up. They both nodded. "That's... not normal," I muttered.

"You're right, it's not," Ahna agreed, "But it's a good thing."

"What were you doing down there, anyway?" my mother asked. I told her the whole story. "Chasing after halis?! Hali-sharks?! You could have been killed!" She continued to yell at me, ranting away. When she was done, she turned to Ahna. "Don't ever ask my baby girl to do that again," she said, glaring at her.

Ahna nodded, eyes down. "Yes ma'am," she murmered.

"Come on, we're going home," my mother declared.

"Yes, Mama," I replied, giving a half-hearted wave at Ahna as we walked away.

.

Two days later, I was back. With just my feet in the water, I walked back and forth across the shore, calling, "Ahna! Ahna, where are you?" and other various things similiar to that.

Finally, Ahna popped up. "We just chased the last of the hali-sharks out of our land!" she declared. I grinned.

"That's great!" I exclaimed.

She sighed. "Yes, it is. And it's all because you scared them because of killing one of their own."

"I have a feeling there's a force that causes these things to happen," I decided.

Ahna smiled, and answered, "I think I know what it is - fate.
