A/N: Sorry about the long wait, but anyway, here's part 2!

The woman remained silent for a moment or two, and then burst into laughter. Mocking laughter. She laughed so hard that by the time she was done laughing, her eyes were watering and she had a mirthful smile upon her face. “Save us? You are but a child,” she said after the bout of laughter had left her. Her eyes showed that she completely doubted me, but she wished she could let herself have faith in me.

“Ma’am, I am completely serious. I don’t know how, but I will do it. What will it take to prove that to you?” I replied confidently, my frustration evident from my tone. The woman just stared at me after I had finished speaking.

“To prove it to me, you must win a duel in the Sand Valley, and then you must take an oath of blood,” the woman replied, absolutely serious, her expression grave. I could tell that she wasn’t joking. I would have to do this if I ever wanted her to believe in me. But once again she was confusing me.

“A duel in the Sand Valley?” I echoed.

The woman nodded. “Yes. The Sand Valley lies 12 miles due northwest of here, and runs through the Canyon of Truth. It is there that the 10 Kings of Skymer hide. Anyone who traverses to the Sand Valley has a chance to duel with one of them. If the king chosen to duel with wins, the death of his opponent is carried out the next morning. If the king chosen to duel with loses, his opponent is given the Jewel of Accra, a strange jewel that contains powers that can only be wielded by the lucky soul who possesses it. There are only three Jewels of Accra, and already two have been won by powerful men who have won against their chosen kings. The 10 Kings of Skymer have the last one which the last lucky winner of a duel in the Sand Valley will receive.”

“You mean that this place has canyons and valleys and such?” I replied, wondering if this wasn’t as barren as a land as I had thought.

“Yes, there are some,” the woman replied, her pale green eyes staring at me. “So, are you going to do it?”

I gazed at her thoughtfully for a moment, and then asked, “What is your name?”

“Emma,” she replied. “And yours?”

“Calli,” I said briefly. “So, Emma, are you quite sure that there is still one Jewel of Accra left? And if I go, will you accompany me?” I watched her closely, uncertain about my decision.

“Yes, there is still one Jewel of Accra remaining, and if you happen to decide to go, I will indeed accompany you and help you find your way,” Emma replied with a tad of impatience.

My reply was brief and completely certain. “Then we leave in 2 hours time.”

***

Soon, Emma and I were walking across the flat land in a northwestern direction. I glanced behind my shoulder at the large mass of water and its swarm of people in the distance. Emma told me the people called it Black Patch Pond, although it was really too large to be a pond, it seemed more like a lake. As we trudged on, Black Patch Pond got farther and farther away, appearing smaller and smaller until we could no longer see it. Although the blue and orange tinged sky showed no sign of a sun, heat scorched our backs, making sticky sweat drip down our faces.

Emma was a silent companion, saying not a word as we walked. After we had been walking for too many hours to count, our feet were covered in blisters and we were too exhausted to go any farther. Both of us sat down and Emma took out a canteen she had filled with the black water of Black Patch Pond. We each took a few sips, and the water strengthened us as Emma had said it would. There was no need for sleep in this false place of death, the water was all we had needed, so we got up and continued on, still not having said a single word between us.

“So, we don’t sleep ever?” I asked her after we had been walking for a few more hours, hoping to get her talking and break the silence. I turned to her as we continued on, my amber eyes gazing into her pale green ones.

Emma shook her head. “Not exactly, Calli,” here I was surprised to hear her finally call me by name, “we can sleep if we want to. We don’t need it, but it is sort of a luxury and it helps pass time.”

I just nodded then. “How much farther do you think we have to go?”

“About 4 miles, maybe 5,” she said in reply. I threw my head back and groaned just then, and was surprised to hear her laugh an amused laugh. Right then, I felt that she was my friend and I could trust her with my life. That we would end up being friends forever. The moment felt perfect, and we both remained silent, walking forward and saying nothing so as not to ruin it.

By the time we reached the Canyon of Truth, we had probably about 60 blisters on our feet. Each. Walking up to the great canyon, I felt small, so very small. Standing beside me, I heard Emma stop walking and say, “Well, here it is. The Canyon of Truth.”

I just nodded, wondering what was in store for me here.

[To be continued…]
