Kacey James Green is credited to LyingNaked. ^____^ Thanks very much for entrusting him to me.

*

I was sure Kacey Green was holding me just a tad tighter than was necessary for side-along apparition. And the way he was looking at me was enough to make me reconsider how badly I really needed to get to Knockturn Alley.

Kacey was far from my favorite person—an oily looking Ravenclaw with bad acne and a hooked nose, and a bit of a creep—but I had no choice. He was the only seventh year who was willing to meet me in the middle of the night to sneak off school grounds and apparate with me to Knockturn alley. What his motive was for doing me the favor I had not seen fit to ask. I hadn’t really wanted to know, and Kacey was one of those very socially awkward people who probably would have told me exactly what he’d been thinking when he’d said yes, something it was only too easy to read on his bluntly unattractive face.

“You know I’ve never been to Knockturn Alley before,” said Kacey in a low whisper. We were standing on the edge of Hogsmede, just far enough from the school to be able to apparate away. He had one arm draped mock-casually around my waist. I had my eyes closed and was trying not to let my repulsion and impatience show on my face.

No one had been to Knockturn Alley, not since it was closed off after the Second War. But there were rumors that though its entrance was boarded shut a person could still get in and buy forbidden wares on the infamous street if they knew the right tricks. I’d paid an old hag a great deal of money to receive the secrets that would let me enter Knockturn Alley only to have to drag Kacey along at the last second.

“I’ve never been there either,” I hissed. “That’s the point. We’re getting in tonight.”

“I know,” said Kacey. Even in whispers his voice was more like a whine. “But, I mean, I’m not going to be able to apparate there if I’ve never been. That’s what I meant.”

“Fine,” I snapped. “I know that. Just take us to Diagon Alley, we can get in from there. And for God’s sake do try not to splinch us, won’t you?”

“Sure, Land,” said Kacey. “Don’t worry about it. Hold tight.”

I raised an eyebrow, though it was unseen in the dark. “Aren’t you holding tight enough for the both of us?” I asked.

He didn’t meet my eyes. I thought I saw a tinge of color rush over his cheeks. “I’ve never done Side-Along before, I’m just trying to keep us both in one piece.”

I sighed and reluctantly took hold of his forearm. I hoped to Merlin this trip would be worth it. If the books I needed weren’t in Knockturn Alley I wasn’t sure where I’d find them.

In the Hogwarts library books on Necromancy were few and far between. Or at least the ones that did more than warn the reader away from ever using it were.

“Here we go,” said Kacey. He took two steps and then made a sharp turn. For a second I felt as if we were being squeezed through a straw and I worried about what would happen if Kacey screwed up and we got splinched together or something horrible like that, then the air around us was decompressed and I stumbled out of his grasp and onto the pavement of Diagon Alley.

I doubled over, taking a great gasp of the cool night air.

“You okay?” said Kacey.

“F-fine,” I choked out. I’d never apparated before, but I wasn’t about to tell him that. “Let-Let’s just go.” I thought I was going to be sick. I checked quickly to make sure I had all ten fingers and toes before straightening up and getting my bearings.

“You sure you’re okay?” said Kacey. “You look a bit ill.”

“I’m okay,” I said. “It’s nothing. Come on, we’re wasting time.”

I started off towards the place where Knockturn Alley used to be. The entrance was boarded over now, of course. It had gotten much harder to buy Dark Wares since the end of the Second War, and I knew the ministry kept watch over the entrance even now so as to apprehend anyone purchasing anything they ought not to be. I had a cover story in case we got caught.

“How are we going to get in there?” asked Kacey, eyeing the closed off entryway curiously.

“Magic,” I said, pulling my wand out from under my cloak. “How else.”

“Oh, right,” said Kacey. “Alohamora.”

I rolled my eyes. “Don’t be stupid. That’s just a charm for simple locks. If you want to get in here you have to know more than that.”

I searched the boards and found what I was looking for. Near the top right corner a five-pointed star had been burned into the wood. It was nothing remarkable. Nothing you would possibly see unless you were looking for it. I tapped it once with my wand and then traced my own star into the air above the boards. For a second the magic hung in the air like a sheen, waiting, and then I uttered a word of old magic, and the barriers in front of the Alley’s entrance melted away as if they’d never been there.

“Merlin’s trousers,” breathed Kacey.

“Come on,” I said. “Unless you want to wait here for me.”

He shook his head vehemently. “Nuh-uh. I’m comin’ with you.”

“Then move.” I snapped. “The entrance won’t stay open forever.”
