In most cases, arranged marriages are a thing of the past. The time where parents placed their own flesh and blood into a relationship against their will is a dreadful ritual that was far more common back in the eighteenth century. This, however, hasn’t stopped my family. My parents were caught up in an arranged marriage. Both of their parents had arranged marriages and, supposedly the system worked for them. Although my parents were like me and wanted nothing to do with the horrifying terror of forceful matrimony, they stayed together until all of my grandparents passed on.

After ten years and four kids together, my parents discovered the modern process of divorce. They tried to remain close to one another for the sake of my brothers and I, but even we encouraged their separation. I know, it’s not every day when you hear a teenager talking about how thrilled she is when her parents split up. Truth be told, I was ecstatic with the result. I was to decide which parent I wanted to spend my time with and when. Having that kind of freedom so quickly was shocking to me, but, in my personal opinion, well deserved.

Throughout my life, I was well aware that my father was quite the business mogul in Miami. I spent many of my teen years in our beach house, staring out at the ocean. Hanging on the walls of our abode were gold and platinum records by various artists. Dad was a big time record producer and took his work very seriously. As a result of this, I was a very spoiled child. I went to award shows, concerts, and several business meetings with my father. I was often with him to scout out any potential artists for his label. After his divorce, my father seemed to allow my brothers and I much more freedom than we had ever experienced before. We were never really given a specific curfew or any chores to do around the house. It was obvious to me that we were not what someone would call “normal”, but that was okay with us.

After my three older brothers graduated high school, my parents began speaking to each other again. At first, I was confused by their sudden closeness to each other, but I then realized that it was not for their own personal benefit, but to that of my brothers. Although the arranged marriage route was obviously wrong for my parents, they believed in the possibility that it may have skipped a generation. Within a five year period, all of my brothers were married, two of them with children. As I met each of their wives (victims), I became shocked to notice the strange happiness that they seemed to express. I had always believed arranged marriage to be some kind of sick game. I had never imagined it to be something that people could grow to like or appreciate.

Even after seeing the fates of my older brothers, I still wasn’t a big believer in the thought of someone else picking a husband for me. I, however knew my own fate to be inevitable. On my seventeenth birthday, I noticed my parents calling each other frequently once again. They tried to hide it from me, but I knew what it was all about. I often found myself hiding all around the beach house, trying to avoid my father every time the phone would ring. As I hid from the universe, I found myself thinking about what the guy my parents were thinking about for me would really be like. I wondered what he would look like, what kind of interests he would have, and if my parents would really allow me to share my opinion of him before rushing me to the altar.

One night that I remember thoroughly was the night that my father and I took a visit to 24/7. 24/7 was a teen club in Miami that I found myself taking many trips to. Dad would usually go with me during the later hours to check out the entertainment acts. The majority of them were up-and-comers that hadn’t had much on stage experience. However, Dad had managed to find a few decent acts there before. I had grown to enjoy our outings together. I was usually brought along on these sort of things, due to the fact that I was my father’s company’s target demographic. I was there to express any and all concerns about a group or artist that I had. My father always took the time to value my opinion. It was one of the many other ways that I felt like an adult.

A brand new group was about to hit the stage at 24/7. I had a kind of strange feeling in my stomach that I hadn’t had before. I felt like I was the one getting ready to preform. My father and I took our seat at our regular VIP table just feet away from the stage. With us was Raul Ramirez, another producer at my dad’s label who was also a long time family friend, and Eddie Yatter, one of the many vocal coaches that my dad had hired to perfect his stars. The four of us had sat around the table like judges on some TV show. The emcee took to the stage and I noticed many teenage girls lining up just in front him. He started to introduce the group, but I could hear their name over all of the screaming girls.

The curtains to the stage opened and revealed five boys. They were all turned away from us at first, but as they turned around, they all hit notes, landing in perfect harmony, they ended up working out some sick choreography and they all sang beautifully. I looked over at Eddie, and even he seemed impressed. I worked my way down the line and examined each boy very carefully. It wasn’t until I got to the end of the row when I finally saw him.
