Let it be known that evil forces are conquering TPD...evil forces that are collectively known as ONE-STAR-RATERS!! *dramatic and ominous music*
Anyway. If you've ever successfully completed a story that appeared on Top Rated, then you'll know what I'm talking about. It starts off innocently...you return home from school and immediately pounce onto your computer, which is comparable to your life. You eagerly switch it on and click on the link to your story to see if it got any views. With a jolt, you realize your story has been rated 5 STARS by FOURTEEN DIFFERENT PEOPLE! You jubilantly flounce away to complete your homework, which is math. Fifteen minutes after you scribble down meaningless and random answers to your problems (you're planning on copying off of your best friend at lunch), you eagerly return to thedollpalace.com/story, and nearly faint when you see that some freak has rated your story a 1!! Sobbing pitifully, you scroll down, only to see that the malicious creature that downrated your story DIDN'T EVEN LEAVE A COMMENT. Alas! Quickly, however, your tears of self-pity transform into droplets of fury. Angrily, you borrow your brother's baseball bat and smash your computer into shards of silicon, plastic, and whatever else computers are made of. Livid with rage, you devote the rest of your pathetic life to the purpose of seeking out and murdering the evil one-star-rater that wiped your story off the charts!! MWAAHAHAHAHA!!
If this sounds familiar to you, then you have been the victim of DOWNRATERS--desperate, unpleasant human beings who exist for the purpose of feeding on the souls of their unfortunate prey! Hundreds of other users will be able to sympathize with your anger and self pity...Except, hopefully, you didn't ACTUALLY faint, cry, or smash your computer after you discovered your story had been downrated. If you DID do one of those things, don't worry. I'm sure your doctor will prescribe medication.

What triggers the nasty behavior of a one-star-rater, which are also known as downraters? Is it jealousy? Malice? Spite? Stupidity? Based on seconds of tedious, complicated experiments and research, I have come to the conclusion that the reason for downrating is ALL OF THE ABOVE. Admit it. At some point in your life on TPD, you've been insanely jealous of the writers that have made it onto Top Rated. I know I have. Downraters are different. They probably have some kind of mental flaw that turns the jealousy into malice. Or, perhaps, downrating is carried out by desperately spiteful souls. An example? Most of us have read the amazing series known as "When All Else Fails" by kklover9. Unfortunately, in the second installment, a very frightening girl known as "Oduck" commented saying "Kklover your a b.i.tch simple and plain and I h.ate you I gave you the rate you deserved an R." (Random R-Rating is also a form of downrating.) Excuse me, Oduck?! Have aliens collectively sucked out your brains with bendy straws? Obviously, this must be the case, because Oduck has no other excuse for her behavior. It is doubtable that Oduck even READ the story. Clearly, we should all buy pitchforks and flamethrowers, organize an angry mob, and set buildings on fire.
Unlike Oduck, downraters usually don't leave an identity behind. They are cowards, and nothing more. They are terrified of the response they will receive when their identities are discovered, so they downrate anonymously. They will probably never feel repentance, and if they do, they will not be forgiven quickly.
Please, DON'T downrate!! When you rate a perfectly decent story a one because of jealousy or spite, you're not helping anybody...not even yourself. When your downrating schemes are rewarded with YOUR story on top rated, it is more than likely that it will be downrated within fifteen minutes as well. It's a neverending circle of pain!!
The next time you see a story on top rated that isn't yours, take the time to read it before you give it a low rating--because ratings are permanent, and no matter how much repentance you feel, the rating will always remain less than a five. When you find it in yourself to be the better person, not only will other people like you, but you'll like yourself a lot more.
But, if that doesn't work, we should all form an angry mob.

NOTE: I don't have a problem with anyone awarding a story one star if they leave a comment with constructive criticism. Spontaneously downrating stories, however, is VILE.
