Well in theatre we are supposed to write a play. I decided to work by myself and now I cam done with my rough draft. You are probably expecting something cute and funny. But no I wrote a very serious depressing teen story. I hope you like it!
Scene: The stage is set as a bedroom: bed, desk and chair. Cassandra is leaning against a chair and she is popping bubble gum. She’s wearing a mini skirt with a tight fitting shirt, her hair is smooth and free, she gives the impression of a high school drop-out, although she is very smart. On the chair sits her best friend, Jasmine. She is listening to Cassandra and eating a banana. She is wearing a simple shirt with a band logo and ripped jeans. Jasmine acts innocent and is always shy.
Cassy: I don’t understand, how can he do this to me?
Cassy paces around the room. Jasmine shrugs and peels open the banana.
Cassy: This stupid bubble gum!
She throws the gum in the trash can in rage.
Cassy: Every time I make a stupid bubble, I’m reminded how he used to reach over and pop it right in my face.
Jasmine: -She speaks in a childish voice- Cassy, would you please listen to what I’m trying to tell you? Everything that you and Edward did is behind us. He was a mean boyfriend. You don’t need to think about him. You need to get over him and stop chewing the bubble gum if it bothers you so much.
Cassy: Well, maybe I don’t want to get over him. I opened my heart to him. He knew all my secrets. I was so in love, he is... was the guy for me. -Cassy pulls another piece of gum from her pocket and chews it.-
Jasmine: -outraged- You can never forgive the guy that cheated on you!
Cassy: I know Jasmine, I know.
Jasmine: Good, and we both know that the girl he cheated on you with lives in Vegas and you will never have to meet her. You should be thankful that Edward’s step-brother told you.
Scene: Edward’ and his step-brother, Julian, are standing on stage. There are no props. There are just two lights shining on them as the rest of the stage is dark.
Edward: Why would you tell her I did that? You know that while we were in Vegas I was practically glued to my phone talking to Cassy! You’re my step-brother and we have to at least get along!
Julian: You’ve got to calm down, I know what you did. I’m not exactly sure with who, but I want to be there for Cassy when she doesn’t have you. You can’t always win the girls. -Julian walks away, the light follows him, one light stays on a horror-stricken Edward.-
Edward: Julian! -Light fades from Edward-
Scene: Julian walks over to where Cassy is popping bubble gum. Her outfit is the same, indicating it is the same day, and she is wiping away tears.
Julian: Cassy, what’s wrong?
Cassy: -She glares at him- I think you know perfectly well.
Julian: What are you talking about? So the whole you and Edward thing didn’t work out, that’s nothing to cry over.
Cassy: Edward was the best thing that ever happened to me. I was finally happy.
She bursts into more tears and Julian wraps his arms around her.
Julian: You have me.
Cassy: -She wriggles out of his grasps and looks at him in shock- Julian? What did Edward do exactly?
Julian: -Shrug- I saw him cheating on you.
Cassy: Again, you are being vague and won’t give me the brutal details. You’re not lying to me?
Julian: I could never lie to such a pretty girl like you. -He takes her hand and pulls her to him- I want you to be happy and with Edward out of the way. We can be happy, together.
Cassy: -Pulling away- Did you lie to me about Edward so that I’d go out with you?
Julian: No, of course not.
Cassy: I have to go.
Scene: Cassy is sitting on her bed, a pack of bubble gum lying next to her. She is talking on the phone to Edward, who is standing on stage with a separate light on him. His scene is a park.
Cassy: What is wrong with your brother?
Edward: You know that I would never...
Cassy: But I keep hearing that you did all this stuff with this girl.
Edward: Cassy listen to me, I would never want to hurt you.
Cassy: I’m sorry, I just don’t believe you.
Edward: Why? I don’t understand. I was a great boyfriend. You always got what you wanted.
Cassy: I can’t trust you or your step-brother anymore. -She hangs up the phone-
Scene: Cassy is walking in the park as Jasmine runs over, practically tripping over herself in horror.
Jasmine: Cassy, Cassy come quick. Edward is saying that because you broke it off with him, he’s going to kill himself!
Cassy: What? -Jasmine takes Cassy’s hand and drags her over to Edward who is holding a knife up to his wrist.- Edward!
Edward: Cassy! Oh please Cassy, forgive me, I can’t live without you!
Cassy: Stop please, you’re making a scene.
Edward: So what? Let them stare! I have nothing to hide. I love you and if I can’t have you I won’t live!
Cassy: Edward, stop! You need to put the knife down and think clearly.
Jasmine: Edward, please stop. You’re scaring me.
Edward looks at Jasmine and nods. He puts the pocketknife back in his pocket and pulls Cassy into a hug. Julian walks onstage and frowns.
Julian: Cassy? Have you forgiven him?
Cassy: -Pulling away from Edward- No, of course not.
Edward: Why not? I didn’t do anything.
Cassy: I am very sorry. -She runs offstage in shock-
Edward: Cassy! -He runs after her-
Julian and Jasmine give each other side glances.
Julian: I almost have it finished. -Jasmine nods and they walk off stage whispering-
Scene: Cassy is stomping away from Edward who is running to catch up with her.
Edward: I don’t know why you won’t listen to me, but just hear me out for one second. I would never in my whole life do something as horrible as cheat behind your back. I don’t know what Julian said to you, but it isn’t true. I can’t live without you.
Cassy: But Julian told me...
Edward: -Cutting her off- Who cares what Julian said!
Cassy: I do!
Julian enters, he is holding a single rose which he hands to a surprised Cassy.
Cassy: Why did you get me a flower?
Julian: I wanted to apologize on my step-brothers behalf. His behavior has been very rude and I am sincerely sorry.
Edward: What?
Julian: -Speaking to Edward- Maybe you should go now.
Edward: Maybe you shouldn’t give a flower to other people’s girlfriends!
Julian: Maybe she’s not your girlfriend anymore!
Cassy: Stop! -They look at her in confusion- I am done with both of you.
Edward: -He is mad now, the pocketknife is held up to his wrist again- If you leave now I am going to kill myself.
Cassy: No you won’t. -As she is leaving Edward lightly touches his skin with the knife and screams- Edward! -She turns to face him, then realizes he is bleeding, seizes his wrist and puts pressure on it.-
Julian: Edward you can’t make her stay with you.
Cassy: Edward, listen to me. I’m going to call your mother and she is going to get you some help if you are so depressed about me leaving you. But I can’t look at you in the same way anymore.
Scene: Julian is hugging Cassy, she is crying. They are wearing different clothes.
Cassy: Why did he have to do that?
Julian: He was upset and he didn’t talk to anyone.
Cassy: But I never thought he would really go through with it.
Julian: I have something to confess.
Julian tilts her head up facing him, and frowns at her. Wipes away the tears streaming down her face and shakes his head.
Julian: Edward never cheated on you. I made it up so you would break up with him and go out with me. I never knew he was so in love with you. I would have never... If I only could go back and not... I’m sorry... So sorry...
Cassy: You... You are the reason he’s dead? I don’t understand. And to your own brother? I’m appalled.
Julian: It wasn’t just me. Jasmine was in on it. The whole thing was her idea.
Jasmine enters. It is obvious she was just crying.
Jasmine: Blaming the whole thing on me? That’s low!
Cassy: What?
Julian: Oh please Jasmine, you’re the reason he’s dead. If you would have just told him you liked him!
Cassy: You liked him?
Jasmine: As a friend.
Julian: Liar!
Jasmine: It’s not all my fault!
Cassy: How could you? I thought we were best friends forever?
Jasmine: There are a lot of things you don’t know about me.
Julian: Cassy, I am so sorry.
Jasmine: We’re so sorry. But, here. -She pulls a note out of her pocket and a pack of bubble gum. She hands them to Cassy- His mom found it on his pillow. The police were searching his stuff and took it, I just got it back.
Cassy: It’s his suicide note? -Jasmine nods. As Cassy reads the note out loud, she stumbles over some words and holds back sobs- Dear Cassy, You mean the world to me and I’m going to miss everything about you. Your smile and all of that stupid bubble gum you chew. So I leave you with my last pack, and all the memories that are written upon it. With love, Edward. |
