Norraine scurried down the dark cold corridor, her heavily starched underskirts rustling loudly. Hetricia shuffled audibly behind her on the polished floor. Both had armfuls of linnens such as curtains, beadsheets, undergarments and tablecloths. They stopped in front of a large, oak door with ornate handles and carvings around the frame. Norraine waited patiently to be let in shifting her weight slightly. Hetricia's hair began to loosely slide from the tight bun it was usually arranged into and Norraine tucked it back under her bonnet for her just as the heavy door creaked open. Mistress May let the household servants enter her chamber and closed the door impatiently. "Why must you always take your time to arrive when I need you most?" she fumed. "I have been waiting for almost two whole minutes for someone to come in and help me dress." Hetricia exhaled loudly and May's eyes flashed. "Don't you appreciate the job you were given, servant?" Hetricia looked up defiantly. No one looked up. ever. Norraine tugged Hetricia's sleeve. She didn't want anything to happen to her, she was so young. Hetricia came from a poor family, and couldn't afford to lose her job so quickly.
