Layla was a short girl. She had short light brown hair that extended just above her shoulders. At school, she had many friends. It seemed like she had everything she wanted, but still, something was missing. No one, not even her, knew what it was. Now, when she was 12 years of age, something terrible happened. When Layla turned on the news to see if anything new had happened, a weather report came on. It said a level 5 hurricane was going to hit New Orleans. Almost immediatley, she picked up the phone and punched 10 digits into the phone.

"Hello?" asked a voice.

"Yeah, Jessica, it's Layla," she replied.

"Hey, what's up?" Jessica asked.

"Well, did you hear about the hurricane that's hitting Florida?"

"Yeah, it's awful. They said the whole city is going to flood!"

"It's not going to hit you, is it?"

"No, it's not. My mom made sure of it."

"Ok, well that's all I needed to know. Bye!" And with that, she hung up the phone.

A couple days later, the hurricane struck. Seeing the damage it caused, Layla was crushed. Thousands of people were seperated from loved ones that they'd never see again. Layla was almost about to cry when her mom came in.

"Sweetie, here's your allowance for this week....$20," her mom said. "Really? I'll have enough money to buy that new computer AND the printer!" Layla said excitedly. She ran to her room and opened up a small box with butterflies painted on it. Her grandmother had given it to her when she was 9. It had an inscription on it that read "She who refreshes others will herself be refreshed".

Layla turned on her TV. It was on the news, but she wasn't listening to it. She opened the little box and took all the money out. $3,000 in cash. It had took her 2 years to save up that much. She leaned back on a pillow and listened to the TV with her eyes closed. "...And thousands have been proclaimed dead..." at this, Layla looked up at the screen. A Red Cross worker popped up. "...Yes, that's right. And if anyone would like to donate, go to our website for the details."

As she clicked away on the mouse, Layla got sadder and sadder. All the big websites had stories everywhere about this hurricane. She went to the Red Cross website. Right then, she had to make a hard decision. Did she really need her own computer? She did have one that her family all shared...and she might even be able to bribe her mom to put the computer in her room...Layla looked at the box where her money was stored. Then she saw the inscription. She looked back at the screen, and clicked "Confirm Donation".

*******7 years later*******

Layla slowly drove up to the post office of her college. After 7 years, she was still unhappy. She still never smiled as much as other people. In fact, she barely smiled at all now. As she stepped out of her truck, she accidentally slipped. After cursing at herself, she dusted off her jeans and walked up the path to the post office. She sorted through the junk mail and bills for her car, she found a large envelope was at the bottom of the pile. It read:

Layla Manning

Room 29, Colorado University

Department 378

7815

The handwriting was scribbly, like a little kid had written it. It didn't matter. When she got back to her dorm, she opened the envelope. It said:

Dear Layla,

You may not know me, but I know you. If you remember, 7 years ago, a hurricane hit New Orleans. It killed many people, including some of my friends. When we all returned from Texas after the streets were cleaned and stuff, the Red Cross came. They gave each family $3,000 for essentials, and they paid for a motel to be built. You were a donator for my family. You helped us buy food and clothes until our house was done being built. I would just like to thank you for everything you've done for me.

-Kayla

P.S. I sent you some pictures of me and my house. Maybe we could be pen pals or something...well, bye for now!

At this, Layla smiled.
