[Prologue]
Tom Marvolo Riddle sat hunched over a yellowing journal on his bunk in the orphanage dormitory. He clutched an ancient ballpoint pen in his left hand, and a flashlight in his right. Tiny snores erupted from the other orphans, enveloped in their subconscious thoughts. Tentative footsteps outside the door caused Tom to quickly switch off his flashlight and dive under the covers.
Light from the hallway illuminated a plump, graying woman. She stood framed in the doorway for a few moments, then smiled, satisfied."Sleep well..." she murmured, quietly shutting the door and tip-toeing away.
"Freak..." muttered Tom, immediately removing himself from the covers and switching the flashlight on once more.
"You know, you really should be sleeping," grumbled a sleepy voice, two bunks away from Tom.
"Shut up, Adrienne," said Tom, rudely. "Go back to sleep." Adrienne forced herself into a sitting position and glared at Tom.
"You know," she declared, "I don't think I've ever met anyone ruder than you, Thomas Riddle."
"I said, SHUT UP!!" roared Tom. Sleepy murmurs arose from several beds in the dormitory. Tom fell silent, a sullen expression on his face as he picked up his journal and continued to scribble his dark thoughts onto the crumpled, aging pages.
"Now you've gone and woken everyone up!" she scolded. Tom slid off of his bunk and stomped out of the room, bringing his flashlight with him, and leaving his journal on the quilt. Adrienne followed suit, marching smartly behind Tom.
"You'll get into loads of trouble if you leave the dorm," warned Adrienne.
"Go away," growled Tom, quickening his pace. Adrienne was now jogging to keep up with him.
"Where are you going?" she asked, panting.
"It's none of your business."
"It is TOO my business, seeing as I'm coming with you."
"No, you're NOT."
"I am, too!"
"NO, YOU'RE NOT."
"YES, I--" A terrified shriek escaped Adrienne's gaping mouth as an unseen force threw her violently against the side of the orphanage building. She gasped. "Tom, what--"
"GO BACK."
Preparing to argue, Adrienne caught sight of Tom's pale face, contorted with anger. Blinded by fear, she scrambled back towards the dorm as fast as her scrawny legs would allow her.
Tom looked at his hands. They were chalk white in the milky illumination of the soft, yellow moon. He twisted his fingers. To him, they appeared to be long, spindly claws. Tom didn't know what had happened any more than Adrienne. But strange things always happened when he was angry...when he was sad...when he was upset. He sat down on the damp grass, seized a handful of weeds, and pulled. A large clump of green grass sat in his outstreched palm. Tom watched as the grass slowly turned brown, then shriveled. It was uncanny, the way strange things always happened around Tom Marvolo Riddle.
