I don;t think detentions help in my opinion. I mean, so what you missed a lesson or forgot your homework or flung something at the teacher. Whats your opinion on detentions? Do you think they seriously mean anything?

If you don't want to get detention, then don't break the rules. It's fairly straightforward. In any case, school punishments like writing lines or having to stay after school are to teach you the consequences of your actions; ie, what happens in the real world. If you throw chalk at a policeman, believe me you'd get a lot worse than having to write, "I must not misbehave" twenty times. O_o

Detentions. Havn't got one, YET.
*Gulp* I'll come back and say something more constructive if I ever do get one, but still. I agree with wolfie about the homework and lesson missing stuff. a detention isn't going to make the student magically know it, it's just going to raise the student's resentment for the school. High resentment leads to kids bringing in guns and murdering their class or commiting suicide. “I mean a weapon you hold. You have a gun, Tanith has a sword... I want a stick.” ~ Valkyrie Cain

With respect, that's rubbish. So teachers shouldn't ever punish kids, just in case they decide to take out their resentment on everyone else? School shootings are nowhere near as common as the media would have you believe, and anyone who tries to commit suicide over something as petty as being given a detention obviously has serious mental issues and could benefit from therapy.
If you throw something at a teacher, bully someone, or break another serious school rule, then you will be punished as you deserve. As for missed lessons and forgotten homework, it should be on a sliding scale; as in, happening just once or twice is forgivable; however, someone who regularly skives off class or doesn't bring their homework in is flouting the rules and should be punished. ![]() |

I don't think i've ever had a detention, but i've had to write lines once in grade two because of my friends dumb actions. I just happened to be there and got in trouble too. -.- Detention is nothing serious or anything to worry about. In my opinion it's pointless. All you have to do is sit quietly or do work for a recess or two. At my school, if you don't do your work 2-3 times in a row or are failing, (or have failed a test) you get a call home.

Honestly I think detensions help. I remember my first detention and it was my last.
I did the homework from the night before and stuck it in my locker in first periode and forgot about it and didn't bring it to the fourth periode causing me to get a detention.. I had to re-due it in the room and I was like man I thought I put it in my book.. Then after a bloody hour re-doing it I go to my locker only to find it. I was soo P***** Off.... I have to take only fifty percent of the mark for handing it in late so it made me realise to be more organized and structure things properly before hand so I never did that after. Think about it. When you get out in the real world you will not get away with "not doing your homework", wether it be post secondary and or a job/career. Your Proffessor in University will just laugh if you don't hand things in because your paying him 1500 dollars to teach you nothing because you don't choose to learn because for what ever reason its not convient for you. Your teachers care about you in grade school and are looking out for you and one day you will all appreciate it. I for sure have and still do. Also when you get a job/career some day your employer will not tolerate you being late just like your teacher won't tolerate late assignments. Its a sign of disrespect; so why do it? You simply shouldn't as you would not like it if your teacher never graded your work and never handed your assignments back or your boss neglects to pay you. Detentions are a way for you to develope an understanding that you did something wrong and have to endure some time as you wasted some one elses. So, in my point of view I strongly agree that it helps just some of you are not looking at it in the same point of view yet, because your still in grade school which is fine, because I was like that to, but I can assure you I appreciate it now. In the real world you can get fired and or have an Academic expulsion which stays with you for the rest of your life and will be on your transcript forever.Plus prevent you from ever entering into any other institution. ![]() |
