Detentions. Do they really help?

Detentions are supposed to be annoying and punishment-esque, not help anyone. E.g; Hanging helps no-one. It's just a punishment for a horrible crime. Save for helping some sycho in the crowd below develop a broken neck fetish.

I think Detentions are reseasonable for acting rude in class but i dont think it is for being late to class or whatnot.

I remeber the first time I got detention in middle school. I got my monthly gift that year and i was at school. I noticed it going through my pants so I ran to the bathroom. I came back to the class late and was assigned detention. my teacher was a guy and I didnt know what to say when he asked why are you late. Lolz in situations like that Detentions are straight up stupid!

Like everyone else has pretty much said, detentions are a punishment, theyre not meant to help you.

Obviously its a punishment. I beilive that was rather harsh though, in my situation.

my school doesn't have detentions. I think if your late once in the whole year, you shouldn't get detentions. On the other hand, if your late every two weeks, then you should get a detention but not as harsh.

The cane? Kiani.... NO. We'd lose teachers. XD You see, kids these days aren't conditioned to expect physical punishment, and if they suddenly got it, they might hit back. =/

We don't have detention in our school, and the punishments we have don't help at all. Even if they get sent out of the classroom or reprimanded by the teacher for something, they just keep on messing around, maybe only a bit more carefully so they don't get caught.

I don't think the main point of punishments is to "annoy" the culprit, unless it's annoying enough to deter them from doing it again. If a teacher spends half an hour lecturing a student on why it's bad to be late, then sure, it's annoying. But if the student does it again the next day, and the next, and the next, it's just wasting everyone's time.
It's obvious the student isn't going to change their ways because of it, so it'd be best to change the method of punishment, or maybe look into why the student is late all the time.

Detention sucks. I usually get one once a month. Always forget my homework or something. I think they should ban detention
