It's tragic in a way; I've never been to Ave so I can't really judge, but I'm sure you'd be able to say whether it's so bad, that a homeless kid would jump at the chance of being fed, housed and clothed in exchange for being a Cat noble's personal toy."

Lucy snorted. "Are you kidding? If men were allowed, Vic and I might have ended up there; as a kid, there was no guarantee I'd become the priest, so I- I don't want to finish that. Anyways, it's literally that bad; even if you work the streets, you barely get fed. Since we're already resorting to that crap, at least if you come here you can be warm and dry for essentially the same job."

Ari looked grim; this was just as she'd suspected. "I expect, too," she continued, "That the birth rate is as low as the death rate is high. So we had better make a stand now before the country is completely ruined."

"Oh, it's almost there," Lucy muttered bitterly. "I'm really relying on the idea that Cecy will help us if we succeed, but if she doesn't..." he shuddered.

"I'm sure that she will," Ari replied. "She can't not, especially after learning about the opium."

"I can't get too hopeful; not after all I've been through," he admitted with a sigh. "So I'll try to be, but there'll be a part of me that believes she's just using us to get the throne..."

"I understand, but it would be a big risk for her to betray the Wolves and Birds," Ari replied.

"I know that; you guys don't go down easily," Lucy said.

[Miranda_]

"And even when we're knocked down, we're just waiting for our enemy to turn their backs and think we're beaten," Ari added, "Before we jump up and beat them down."

"Wish we could do that," he sighed.
