"We can do that," Ulricha replied. "Since they've been living in the caves on Star Island for a while, I doubt they'd mind roughing it for a bit."

"That's right," Phelan replied. "Ari said that she knows a little about what went on at the palace and it was a factor in her wanting to defy the King and join the army, and also in staying with the Wolves after she was injured. She considers herself a Wolf now, anyway; she pack hunts and even howls like a Wolf."

"Probably. We'll just have to go on a goose-chase for the straw; it's the wrong season for it, so anything we find will be last years or even earlier. I don't mind too much, except that it means thy have to occupy the inn longer, and that's a lot of money," Nedakh said with a pensive frown.

Cecy wrinkled her nose. "She howls? How on earth does she pull it off as a cat? I can't imagine managing that whatsoever; the best you might get would be some sort of yowl-scream-roar thing."

"So it's best that they move into the Hall as soon as they can," Ulricha replied. "We can use rugs as well as straw; it'll do for the short term."

"It's not so much what the howl sounds like," Phelan explained, "But whether the pitch is right, and Ari has it correct. Different pitches have different meanings."

"Well, we might as well get to it," Nedakh said.

"Really? It doesn't get confusing?" Cecy asked as she walked alongside Phel.

"If you make a start on the straw," Ulricha said, "I'll go round and look out some rugs."

"Not really," Phelan replied. "Not when we're all used to Ari and know how she howls. It might not sound like a wolf howl, but the pitch is correct and that's what matters."

"Might as well start here in Frei," Nedakh agreed.

"Oh. Are we nearly there?" she asked.

"There's a lot to do, tho," Ulricha said.

"Yeah," Phelan replied. "I'll leave you to talk with Ari alone; I need to find my father, anyway."

Ari greeted Cecy politely once they were there.

"Phelan is probably coming to speak with us regarding the new Beta Apprentice," Ulricha replied.

"Come and sit down," Ari replied. She was dressed in leggings and shirt, and her hair was loose down her back.
