Default Once and Future King: RP - 05-28-2011, 05:51 AM

Rules:

No Mary Sues or Gary Stus please! Just follow the general RP rules set out in the forums and things should roll along pretty smoothly.

2. This RP is based on Arthurian legend. It would be great if you could base the majority of you characters on characters that are actually part of the original tales. Of course you can have OC's but the traditional characters are pretty interesting as well, so have a crack at playing a few of them. Oh, and feel free to include a web page or two on any existing characters in your character form.

3. Please don't be rude or offensive, we all have the right to inter prate characters the way we wish to. Abusing other players is not okay. Of we're all polite and friendly things will be much pleasanter as a whole.

4. Don't randomly take over other people's characters. It's not only confusing but a little irritating. If the person gives you permission then by all means go ahead, but make sure you tell everyone else that you have permission.

5. Yes, this RP may include a fair amount of violence and other such themes. Please be warned, it won't be a gore-fest but we'll need to include such themes for the storyline to make sense.

6. Have Fun!

Every legend has a beginning, the building blocks upon which characters grow, upon which good and evil are precariously balanced trying to obtain some form of stability. The first few events that allow us to understand why characters act the way they do, why they perform the deeds they perform, why they choose the path they will eventually follow. However in the midst of battle an bloodshed, triumph and tracery and romance and reconciliation we tend to forget these humble beginnings. However the beginning remains as one of the most important elements in any legend, not matter how mighty. With this in mind I welcome you to Camelot, a land like no other. It may not look the way you expect, but that's because our story is just starting, and no one knows exactly where it will end.

Uther Pendragon has ruled over Camelot for many years. He's a good king, seared and yet admired by his people. The law is enforced with an iron fist, criminals are punished harshly, the consequence for their crime often being death at the hands of one if the royal executioners. No one is exempt from the law, nobles and commoners alike. Although many people are none to fond of Uther no can deny that he is fair, that he is just. It is very rare that the king falters or loses his grim determination, except perhaps after the death of his wife. Even in this darker hour Uther managed to lead his people to victory, finishing a war with a neighboring kingdom that had lasted several years. Despite the ragged look of the town and the shaggy netting if forest that surrounds the city, Camelot's king stands tall, like the castle he directed be built in the center of the town. Thick stone turrets impale the skyline and several flags fly brave,y from flagpoles that extend past the roof. Guards stand watch from what seems like one hundred different positions. Uther's castle is his pride and as he often says as long as it is standing tall, so will his Kingdom.

Meanwhile hidden by the curving staircases and arched windows of this architectural masterpiece a new generation is finding it's footing in the social standings of it's kingdom, and with each other. This is the generation that will grow to become famous for romances, tragedies and betrayals like no other. Noble or peasant, rich or poor, the names of these children will become famous. However for now they remain at the very beginning of their story, alongside their city. The expectations, pressure and decisions that will fall on their shoulders did not just begin with the tales we know and love, even now as teenagers they must deal with death and misfortune. However every legend has it's heroes, just as every legend has it's villains, and these characters begin to emerge from the anonymity of their childhood lives they're pushed into a spotlight that will never fade. Even now evil threatens the kingdom and temptation never dies. It's your decision which side you will take? Will you choose good over evil or vice versa? Will you allow emotions to rule your decisions? Will you live by your heart or you head? Most importantly, are you prepared to fight for what you believe in?

So welcome, welcome to Camelot, city of legend...

Guinevere - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Name: Guinevere
Age: Fifteen
Appearance: Conventionally good-looking, blond hair, green eyes, fair skin. She can be described as 'pretty' or 'beautiful' however she's not stunning.
Personality: Guinevere is generally quite friendly and cheerful however she's also impulsive stubborn and is often ignorant of others emotions and needs. She's very defensive of those she admires and of her friends and family yet her temper and hard-headedness often lead to her holding grudges for a lot longer than she should. Despite all this she's a good friend, most of the time.
Quick Bio: Guinevere is the daughter of Leodegrance, one of Uther's strongest supporters and also an important noble. The family only consists of herself and her father, after her mothers death and her sisters decision to move on. It was this that played an important role in Leodegrance's decision to move to Camelot upon an invitation from Uther himself. The two moved and have only been in Camelot a few weeks. In this short time Guinevere hasn't managed to make many friends, and Leodegrance has been busy reminiscing with the king.
Compared to many girls, Guinevere was lucky to be born into the family she was. There's never been any abuse, mental or physical. Both her and her father get along quite well apart from the occasional argument caused by the two's similar wild tempers. However in between these flare-ups they have a fairly stable relationship and although it isn't the best, it certainly isn't the worst.

Guinevere stood alone in the corner of the room, although she usually quite liked big celebrations, the feats and dances held in Camelot were different to the ones she used to attend. Several weeks ago she would have been able to attend with a group of friends, they could have danced and had a good time without much thought, however many things in Camelot seemed to revolve around status, no matter how ridiculous it sounded. Besides, the ladies here were different from her former friends. Many of them dressed in dresses that seemed much to revealing and Guinevere wouldn't be caught dead in. It was pointless really, they were only encouraging the men of the royal court to treat them as objects. Guinevere would not be treated as an object, hence she'd rejected several slightly drunken offers to dance.

She glanced in her father's direction, slightly enviously. Leodegrance was busy reminiscing with Uther, the two roaring with good-natured laughter. She turned her attention back to the tables ladened with food and the dance floor ladened with fine cloth and perfume. Guinevere watched the glitzy dresses lass her one by one and tried to look inconspicuous. The last thing she needed was to look arrogant, no matter how much she disapproved of the sleazy lines she heard coming from the vague direction if several of Uther's drunken knights. The best way to look inconspicuous was to eat or drink, it also made it quite clear that she had no interest in dancing. One of the more irritating side effects was that of feeling slightly queasy and she had to savor each piece of food while looking as though she was still hungry. Guinevere moved over politely to make way for a group of excited females before assuming her previous position next to the table. It was going to be a long night.

Uther Pendragon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Name: Uther Pendragon
Age: Fifty or so
Appearance: Tall, average weight, grey eyes, black hair. He has a small but neat beard, and he has quite a sharp bone structure. Although he isn't too bad looking for his age he certainly isn't handsome.
Personality: His wit is almost as sharp as his bone structure. Uther is the sort of man who can find the fault in almost anything but barely mentions the positives. He's very intelligent and is a fantastic strategist however he's often very cold and isn't one to dish out praise. He can come of as arrogant, but his determination is impressive. He's certainly not shy and he's an extremely ambitious man.
Quick Bio: Uther, like his son was born to be king and was brought up in such a manner, hence his manner and personality. Perhaps the only thing that haunts him is the knowledge that Arthur, his only son, was born of an affair not related to marriage. Arthur's true mother Igraine, disappeared soon after her son's birth much to Uther's dismay. However Arthur was raised to become the next king of Camelot however not by Uther, his father's affair covered up with powerful magic and lies. The kingdom was told that Uther's true wife was killed during childbirth when in fact she was assassinated on the day she supposedly gave birth. This served Uther and Igraine's story well and no questions were asked. The guilt however, lived on in Uther and he's never revealed what actually happened between him and Igraine to anyone, not even his son.
Merlin managed to convince Uther that the best way to care for his sone was to allow him to be raised by one of the lower nobles. This way Arthur would get a sense of the highs and lows of the kingdom rather than becoming spoilt or arrogant. Uther agreed, wanting to allow his son the chance to become the best leader possible, however has always kept an eye out for his son from a distance however has never showed any sort of emotion towards his son and will only address him by his name, not wanting to express any sort of love.

Uther stood next to his old friend and surveyed the celebration. The two had spent over an hour already reminiscing old times and during these pleasurable moments he had lost sight of his son. It was no secret he held high hopes for Arthur, he wanted him to have a good marriage, become a fearless leader, continue to lead Camelot forward with the same determination he, Uther, had. However in the midst of the cheer he had momentarily forgotten these hopes. Now they resurfaced and he kept a keen eye out for any trouble around the room. Several of his knights had found partners and with the introduction of music had begun to dance, attracting more people by the minute. As far as he could tell Arthur wasn't among them, and he turned a critical eye back to Leodegrance. If Arthur performed any out of place actions tonight he would have hell to pay tomorrow morning. He would make sure of that, even if he wasn't dealing out the blows himself.

Percival - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Name: Percival
Age: Seventeen
Appearance: Average, height and weight. His features resemble that of a sheepdog, shaggy brown hair and brown eyes, although he also has a air few freckles. He isn't particularly handsome, nor is he particularly ugly.
Personality: The most appropriate word to describe Percival's personality is unsure. He's quite uncertain and though he's fairly intelligent he rambles a lot. He is, though, a very good friend, once you get to know him. He's not very good with people, unlike a lot of other knights. He is appears to be eternally optimistic.
Quick Bio: Percival is the son of King Pellinore and has dedicated most of his life to obtaining knighthood, which eventually managed to accomplish after drastically improving on his swordsmanship. He doesn't have any siblings and his father is usually busy with his duties as king. However he's come to think of Camelot as home seeing as he spends so much time in the castle. Unfortunately he hasn't always been the best swordsman and when he was little he was picked on by other children because of it, luckily he's a little better now. Besides, he's good with horses, which makes up for a lack of hunger for violence.

Percival looked around the hall unsteadily. He was absolutely sure he shouldn't have had that last glass of wine, he'd gone beyond tipsy now and was beginning to feel slightly delirious. Luckily he was supported by the wall behind him, several of the other knights were rather enjoying the attention provided by some of the ladies of the court. Percival had fortunately managed to avoid these attentions which were quite bothersome, besides he'd give the wrong impression if he threw up on his partner, he didn't need that extra trouble.

Come to think of it he was regretting even attending the celebrations, the only reason he had was because it was expected. Percival wasn't usually one for loud music and greasy food. However he much preferred both of these things than being sentenced to death for disrespecting the King's orders. Percival felt himself begin to slide sideways and clutched desperately at the wall. Now probably wasn't one of his best moments, he needed to make sure he never drank that stuff again, it was extremely strong and he was beginning to doubt the existence of his stomach. Percival sighed as he leant his head against the wall. The other knights weren't going to let him forget this anytime soon.

King Arthur - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Name: Arthur Pendragon
Age: 16
Appearance: Arthur inherited some of his father's sharp features, but his face is spared the bony look his father has by his mother's genes. His cheek and chin bones are sharp, but his nose is softer, more buttony, almost childlike looking, and his lips are a little fuller. Arthur is just a tad bit shorter than other men his age, and is fit from training to be a knight himself. He has bright ginger hair and gray-blue eyes, neither of which his parents actually had. Seeing as how people of the time didn't know about recessive genes, this only aids in keeping the public and even Arthur himself from guessing his true heritage. While his face is more pleasant to behold than his father's sharp features, he isn't mind-blowingly handsome, just better than average.
Personality: At this point in our story, Arthur is a bit immature and sort of angry at the world. He is often pulling off stupid stunts and tricks, playing pranks, and playing the part of quite the flirt. In a word, he thinks himself a rebel, though most people just see him as a nuisance. As time goes on and things progress more and more toward chaos, he'll mature some, but he'll never entirely rid himself of his reckless behavior.
Quick Bio: Having been raised by the mild-mannered Lord Ector, who is one of the poorer noblemen around, Arthur feels he fits in with neither noblemen or commoners alike, and trusts only who he thinks is his stepbrother, Kay. He often finds himself wondering how his life would be different were they rich, or had the woman he assumes was his mother had survived the disease outbreak of his early childhood. He has never been mistreated, no matter how much he moans about being one of two noblemen's sons (his stepbrother is the other) who has a list of chores to do regularly.

~

Sir Kay - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Name: Kay Celydon
Age: 18
Appearance: Kay is a very, very tall young man; most people of average height have to crane their necks in order to converse with him. Just like his father, Kay has medium brown hair with hints of red and dark blue eyes, as well as a wide, rounded jaw with a slight cleft to the chin. He is broad-chested and can boast of being one of the strongest around and has rather large muscles. Like most people, he assumes Arthur's red hair is indicative of his relationship to the Celydons, though no one else in the family ever had it in such a vibrant shade.
Personality: Kay is very protective of Arthur, though there are some moments when he's jealous of his younger foster brother. Kay can be envious, quick to anger, and sometimes even a bully. He is strong-minded or pigheaded, depending on who one is talking to. On the flipside, he is very loyal to his family and his friends, and will do anything for them or to defend them if necessary. In times of need, there are few men more reliable than he.
Quick Bio: Kay has spent a lot of his time looking out for Arthur and attempting (and often failing) to keep him out of trouble. There are many times when he resents this unofficial position, but he stubbornly keeps at it since his father's knee gave out years ago and never healed properly. A lot of people have come to see Kay as Arthur's body guard of sorts, or to expect trouble if Kay appears to be searching for Arthur. Unlike Arthur, Kay doesn't mind the chores; it means he doesn't have to look after Arthur, after all, and can't be blamed if Arthur's up to something stupid.

Since he was only two at the time of Arthur's birth, he does not remember that his stepmother did not have him. He does remember, however, when his stepmother died, for he was four. His own mother died having him, but, unlike Arthur, he doesn't hate the universe for his mother's death.

(Ooc Author's notes: Based Kay more on the Welsh legends than the later ones, and most old paintings of Arthur depict him with red hair, so I decided to stick with it)

~

The Celydons had arrived slightly late, thanks, of course, to Arthur; Arthur hadn't wanted to go at all. Now, normally, the redhead reveled in the opportunity to make an entrance, to either flirt or stir up trouble, or both. Preferably both, actually.

But not today. He'd practically had to be dragged from the Celydon estate near what would later be called London. But this was a celebration held by King Uther, and lately Arthur had noticed the king watching him specifically. Why? Had he finally gone too far, committed a capital crime? Was there some special interest the king had in him, the lowly son of a lord? Whatever the case, the strict Uther gave Arthur the chills, and he wanted to avoid the man whenever possible... which wasn't nearly as often as he liked, sadly.

Such as today, at this celebration. So, instead of striding in confidently as per usual, he sort of skulked in and skirted around the edges of the room, amusing and bemusing both Kay and Ector. Ector shrugged it off, and privately wished that Arthur always behaved this way, while Kay sighed heavily, ran a hand through his mop of auburn hair, and followed his brother.

“So, what has your pants in a twist?” Kay asked gruffly, folding his thick arms across his chest.

“Hmm? What? Oh, nothing, nothing at all,” Arthur lied, leaning against the wall and doing his best to look collected.

Kay snorted. “If nothing was bothering you, you'd be out in the center of this room, sweet-talking the ladies,” he said, arching a thick brow. When Arthur seemed to relent and motioned with his hand for Kay to lean in closer, Kay hesitated, then did so.

“It's the king,” whispered Arthur.

“The king?” echoed Kay, his eyebrows shooting high up his forehead. “What about him?”

“I- I don't know, he's just been watching me, and it's creeping me out,” Arthur replied.

Kay chuckled. “Little brother, King Uther watches everybody like a hawk; it's just in his nature.”

“Well, yes, but I feel like he's watching me more, almost- almost as if he has some sort of special interest in me.” Arthur paused and licked his lips nervously, then said, “Have I done anything lately that's bad even for me? Does he fancy me a real criminal?”

“Hmm? No, not that I can think of; your pranks are largely harmless, if annoying, nothing that would warrant an execution. I think your neck is safe...” Kay couldn't help but grin and add, “...for now, at least.”

“Thanks for nothing, Kay,” sighed Arthur.

“Besides, if he is watching you more then anyone else – and I'm not admitting he is, mind- then won't he be suspicious if you slink off and lean against a wall quietly?” Kay said thoughtfully after a moment.

“You're right. And maybe if I talk to someone, I'll forget about him watching me,” Arthur agreed.

“Or, better yet, a lady,” added Kay.

“You're actually encouraging me to go flirt?” Arthur asked. Then he laughed. “Will do!” He surveyed the room, trying to pick out a suitable girl, when he spotted her, the blonde. Had he not tried to hide himself, he wouldn't have seen her at all, hiding in the corner along the same wall as he but a ways further down. “The blonde girl, do you know who she is?” Arthur asked Kay, nodding to Guinevere.

“No idea, she's a new face,” Kay said. “Doesn't look very receptive, though,” Kay added, a warning flashing in his blue eyes.

“Ah, but that's the best part, opening her up. Now, see how she's standing? She doesn't like it here, obviously, wishes to be somewhere else. Look at her clothes; either her father keeps her locked up tight or she hates the lower necklines, possibly flirting, too. Way to crack this nut is to pretend to be avoiding the party just as much as she is... and, if she's really new, she won't have heard my reputation,” Arthur said, eyeing up Guinevere and analyzing her.

“Uh oh, here comes trouble,” murmured Kay, rolling his eyes. He recognized that look; Arthur wouldn't stop until he won the girl.

“I'll see you later, Kay... don't hover too close, okay? I'll have to play this one slow; no trouble yet, I promise,” Arthur said.

Kay sighed. “There'll be no stopping you, either way... but I'll still keep an eye on you. Keep in mind that, whoever she is, she's a lady; keep her virtue intact, at least.”

“What do you take me for, a barbarian?” Arthur said before walking casually over toward Guinevere.

He didn't quite reach her before he sighed and leaned against the wall again, mimicking her far-off expression. He stayed like that for a moment, then pretended to notice her for the first time. “Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't see you there. Did you want to be alone? I can leave, if you want... I just wanted to get away from- from that,” Arthur said, waving his hand at the dancing and looking mildly disgusted.

"Oh no," Guinevere said hurridly, turning to face the boy who had spoken. "It's not as though I own the wall or anything like that, I believe your free to do as you please."

"That must be useful," Guinevere replied, giving the boy a friendly smile. "I'm Guinevere, by the way. You can call me Guine if you like."

"Well, it's nice to meet you, Arthur," Guinevere said, pausing for a few moments. "I take it you're not one for dancing?"
