"Oh, that's how it is, then?" Arthur said, raising an eyebrow, his eyes twinkling. "Well, who's to say that it isn't the other way around, that you're lucky to talk to me?"

"If I'm so lucky," Guinevere began, "then why do I remember it as being you who started the conversation.

Uther closed the door behind himself and Ector, his private dining hall was large and well decorated. "I believe I am correct in assuming it is Arthur you want to speak with me about?"

"Ah, but you looked so bored and lonely that I took pity on you," Arthur countered.

"As Kay is already a knight, yes, I wish to speak with you about Arthur," Ector said. He paused a moment, then continued; "You Highness, Arthur is your only son and heir to the throne. By releasing this... mandate... and knighting him early, you're putting him at risk, for those in command will surely use the younger knights as foot soldiers should we ever need the extra troops. But, yet, to not knight Arthur and knight all the other young men his age would raise more than a few eyebrows... you can see the conundrum we're facing, can you not?"

[Cheshire1996]

"Really?" Guine challenged. "And you weren't bored?"

Uther turned to face Ector. "I have taken this into account. I will select several of the younger knights, Arthur included to be trained further in the art of leading soldiers and in battle techniques and strategy. In addition to this he will serve within Camelot. It is necessary that if henis to be King he realizes that there is more to life than pretty girls and juvenile fun."

"Maybe just a little," laughed Arthur.

Ector looked visibly relieved. "Of course, my liege. I shouldn't have doubted you."

[Cheshire1996]

"Until you stumbled upon my stunning beauty and amusing conversation," Guine joked.

"Arthur must not hear of this before tomorrow, it is important that he does not find out the truth yet. He still has much to learn," Uther instructed. "You're a good man, Ector, I have faith in your decisions in bringing up my son. I have no doubt that he will be a good King when the time is right for him to take over my duties, whether that be because of death or for another reason altogether." it was clear from the look in Uther's eyes that this was an indirect reminder that he did not want to be disappointed by his son.

"Ah, yes, you bewitched me like a Siren's song does a sailor," Arthur said. "I am helpless against you."

Ector, of course, picked up on Uther's hidden message. "I do the best I can, Your Highness. He has a ways to go yet, but I'm sure that, with such a noble lineage as yours, he won't let the kingdom down when the time comes."

"Hmm, but if you don't watch out I'll drown you," Guinevere warned jokingly.

"Good, your faith in him reassures me my decision is the correct one," Uther replied. "You may leave, I imagine you'll want your sleep."

"Uh-uh, you got it wrong; the Sirens sang until the stupid sailors tried to get to them and ended up crashing into the rock they sat on. So, basically, you'll make me lose my mind," Arthur said.

"Then have a good night, Your Majesty," Ector said. He bowed deeply to the king, then turned and left.

"Then I don't think I'd be that potent in the mind-muddling business, my singing is terrible. I think you'd sooner die because the sound would be so horrific rather than because you'd lose you're mind," Guinevere paused, "which would still make me a murderer."

Uther sighed as he watched Ector leave, it was going to be hard to tell Arthur the truth when the time came.
