"Did you know I scorned my cousin for making a... I don't even know what he is, but he's an immortal something that has no soul and just won't die..." she laughed humorlessly and with more than a hint of hysteria. "Well, look at me now, I'm no better than she is."

[Miranda_]

"Are you competitive with your cousin, then?" Arkady inquired. "I wouldn't know what that feels like. I never knew I even had any cousins; and I didn't have any siblings, either."

[spirit_queen]

"Mom used to go on and on about how much better my cousin, Star, was," Angel replied. "I'd come home with an A+ in advanced science, and she'd smirk and tell me, 'Oh, that's good, but not good enough; you know that Star has been moved up a grade, right? You're only advanced in math and science. You have to work harder, be better.' Sometimes after saying something like that, she'd hit me... and whenever we'd go see Star, mom always praised her, or bought her things, and would drop hints that she was the daughter she always wanted... but what about me?" Angel gulped back tears. "It's not like it was my fault that Star's IQ is near the 200s an mine is only just 179..."

Ooc: Dunno what you'd have her be, but 180 is supposed to be genius level, and I figured Star would have to be far up there to manipulate DNA the way she does. O.o

[Miranda_]

Ooc: Yeah; I figured as much.

"Like I said before, your mother sounds like a total b*tch," Arkady said. "You should forget her. My mother was a strong woman. She had to be; my father was killed fighting for the Red Army, and my mother had to be strong and keep things together."

"But I can't forget her- I've tried. Why do you think I dropped out of high school never went to college? I tried to become everything she hated... and it doesn't work. Nothing does," Angel said.

[Miranda_]

"The problem is that you're trying the wrong things. You just need to excise her from your life and stop thinking that you have to be something you're not, just to live up to her," Arkady said, somewhat impatiently.

"If my mother met your mother... she'd give her a slapping she'd never forget."

[spirit_queen]

"I can't though," Angel said, tugging at her "hair" in a sort of crazed frustration. "I've tried! But then they intrude -the memories. They- they just come back to me- the beating, being touched by some of her boyfriends, her snide remarks... I can't escape the memories. I just want to torch that part of my brain and get rid of it. Even amnesia would be better."

[Miranda_]

"I can't say I could ever understand that. However hard my childhood was, there was never anything like that in it."

[spirit_queen]

"I should probably go to a therapist..." Angel said, biting her lip. "But I- I'm scared, for some reason. Scared to change, to move on..."

[Miranda_]

"Maybe you do need to see a therapist," Arkady said. "I can listen to you, but I can't pretend to understand, any more than you'd understand the things I could tell you."
