Meanwhile, Kelly was preparing for his speech. A female aide was nearby; she had long black hair and was dressed smartly. The security guards were readying themselves for any trouble; the subject of mutant rights was a contentious one, and there was bound to be trouble.
The X-men were now making their way towards the building, keeping a look out for the Brotherhood. Jean was surprised to see Wolverine and Bishop join them. "Where's Vaughn?" she asked. "You're supposed to be looking after him." "The assassin got the jump on us," Bishop growled. "He won't do that again, not if I can help it." ![]() |

Bishop checked his watch. "The assassination will happen any moment now," he said. "I'm going after him. That assassin won't be killing anyone once he's had a taste of my gun."
Jean shook her head. "That's not the way," she protested. "We will all go, and deal with this in a more humane way." But things didn't go to plan. The Brotherhood attacked the X-men again, and Bishop took the opportunity to break away and run for the Congress building. Rogue flew up into the sky to see if she could spot him. Inside the building, the people inside clamped down security after learning of the ruckus outside. The female aide led Kelly away to a room. She opened the door, saying, "You should be safe in here, sir," and closed it behind them. Kelly stared in surprise to see a double of his female aide lying on the floor, bound and gagged. He turned on the woman who'd led him in, and choked. She'd changed shape into that of a teenage boy with mint green hair. "You're about to make history," the boy said, with a diabolical grin. "Now we have a witness who can tell the world what happens when you mess with mutants; what happens to those who mess with the X-men. The name is Vaughn; remember it." He pulled out a gun, began to take aim... ![]() |

Both Kelly and the aide were shocked; they backed away against the wall.
Bishop soon heard the sounds of the fight; he ran up to the door and kicked it open. Rogue had seen Bishop enter the building; she flew in thru an upstairs window, hoping to intercept him before he shot Vaughn. The double, which was of course Mystique, fought hard with Vaughn. Mystique, as well as being a shapeshifter, was an accomplished hand to hand fighter, so it was likely that she'd easily get the upper hand. ![]() |
