"I'm not feeding him an entire meal with our food," Wendy smoothly lied, "just little tidbits."

"Fine. I cannae stop you," sighed her father in resignation.

At this point, there was a tap on the window. A black vulture sat on the sill; it was Midnight, and he carried a letter from Draven.

"Oh, look, a message!" Wendy ran to the window and opened it to allow Midnight in. "Hiya there, Midnight! Lookin' extra cute and fluffy today."

Mr. Watson still thought the usage of owls was weird, but this was worse. "Wendy, donnae let that thing into the house!" he cried in alarm.

"Relax, daddy! My friend Draven uses a vulture instead of an owl. He won't hurt you or trash the place," Wendy told him.

Midnight liked Wendy; he sat as good as gold on the edge of the window and held out his leg, where the scroll was tied.

Wendy took the scroll and unrolled it, then lightly pet Midnight as she read its contents...

The message was short, but contained all the necessary details.

Wendy,

My parents leave tomorrow morning, at about nine. You can come over any time after that.

Draven.

"Daddy, can I go over to a friend's tomorrow?" Wendy asked.

"Well, this is a bit sudden-"

"But this is the only time he can have me over!" Wendy whined.

"He? He who?" Mr. Watson asked suspiciously.

"Not my boyfriend, daddy, just my friend," Wendy told him.

"How long do you plan on staying over?"

"Um, all day, I think," she replied.

"Fine," he sighed.

Midnight was waiting for Wendy to send back a reply by him.

Wendy quickly wrote out her acceptance, then tied to back on Midnight ans stroked him one last time before sending him off.

"How can ye stand to pet that thing?"

"He's actually very soft, daddy," Wendy told him.

Midnight flew out the window, back to Draven's house.
