"What happens in winter?" Todd asked. "I never used to mind winter much, cuz I only went out if I was wrapped up in a coat and pawsocks. So it wasn't as if I was ever freezing or anything."

"Winter was very cold, but, unlike rumors say, we did have fires and stuff, and we buried our meat under the snow to preserve it. winter was a slow period, a restful period; we believe that's when the earth goddess rests, and we sort of function at minimum and all that; not mating, no training youngsters, just cubs nearer my age, territory patrols aren't as often, stuff like that," Mina said.

"What did you do when you got bored? Didn't you ever play in the snow?"

"Of course, and we had fun little games to play, and a solstice festival, too," Mina said.

"The solstice is the shortest day of the year, and we have a celebration... we don't always eat plain meat, you know. Most of the time, we have it raw, but on the solstice we have it roasted and seasoned, and we have some dried berries and fruits too to celebrate the end of the lengthening nights and the beginning of lengthening days," Mina said with a smile. "We have games for cubs and adults, and they adults have... uh... what's it called? Mead and wine, I think, that stuff tat makes your brain buzz and makes you act all funny. It's great!" She paused. "I believe humans have a winter holiday, too, right?"

"Yeah; it's called Christmas," Todd replied. "They have turkey, and give presents, and have decorations and stuff. My first owner used to give me a load of presents, and I'd get turkey, but not all owners do that."

"I wish we could really celebrate it," Mina said. "Or any holiday, really, but we sort of can't."

"You need human money to celebrate Christmas, and we don't have any of that."
