"Even if that's true, I fail to see why coming after me now is going to do any good."

"Apparently, we need you for something." She informed him.

"We're bringing you to a government laboratory in the next state west tomorrow."

By the sound of it, Amella wasn't fully comfortable with this idea. She wanted to say something to make him feel better; like that none of the tests would be unpleasant, but she didn't know for sure. She had ruthlessly hunted down vicious criminals, terrorists and other scum of the earth, but this was different. Shadow hadn't technically done anything, but she was still required to drag him back to the powers she served like a stray dog, and it didn't sit well with her at all.

"Unless you have some questions, you can sleep in the spare room over there. If you want to read the file, that's fine too."

[Miranda_]

"I have no questions," Shadow replied, dismissively.

"I just hope that you can live with yourself."

Amella tried to avoid visibly squirming at this, then got up and walked across the room, sitting down at a kitchen counter with her laptop. She tapped in a few keys and a secure emailing program which had been running in the background popped up. She began making her report.

Shadow sat on the bunk in the room he'd been taken to, reading the file. None of it triggered anything familiar; it was like reading about someone else.

Amella eventually fell asleep on the motel couch. She'd made her report and received the go-ahead to transport Shadow.

The next day, Amella woke up, quickly freshened up in the bathroom and woke Shadow up. She asked him if he'd like some breakfast; the options were burnt toast, pot noodles, or stale cereal.

Shadow refused breakfast. In fact, he refused to talk to Amella at all, save in monosylables.

Amella sighed to herself and made pot noodles and coffee, then woke Daniel up while wolfing them down.

"Hmmmm?" he grumbled as he sat up.

"We're going soon."

Meanwhile, in Mephiles' base, Ghost walked past the teenagers who had woken up early and were making breakfast and banged his fist furiously on Mephiles' door.

"Mephiles! Wake up!"
