Shadow saw Maria running after him, and his eyes widened. For all he knew, there could be an FBI retrieval team just around the corner. For a moment, he imagined Maria getting fired at and being killed in front of him... it was too hard to think about, and he couldn't wait to speak to her in case it happened. Shadow teleported back to the park where he'd first spoken to Amella.

Scourge happened to be there, hiding from Rosy, and nearly jumped out of his skin when Shadow materialised next to him.

"Yikes! Don't do that, terrorist boy!" He growled, adjusting his precious leather jacket.

"So, is this drivel on the news true?"

Maria stopped where she was, then fell to her knees and let the tears roll down her cheeks.

[Miranda_]

Shadow leant back wearily against the wall.

"Of course it's not true," he said in a tone that lacked its usual bite.

"But they would have hurt Maria if they'd found me in her house, so I'm going to give myself up. There's no use in fighting it; I can't run away forever."

"Course you can, Mr. Eyeliner. If I was you, I'd grab some explosives and give them exactly what they're asking for."

[Miranda_]

"That's cuz you haven't got a brain and I have. They'd probably shoot me on sight if I did that, and I want to stay alive. In any case, once they find out that they got it all wrong and I'm not the person they're looking for, they'll probably let me go."

Scourge looked disappointed. "Aw, come on, I was hoping to see some smoke!"

Daniel was in the park, waiting, when he spotted Shadow at last; he'd been staying there, thinking that if the kid turned himself in, he'd go there.

For once, he'd been right. He immediately called Amella.

[Miranda_]

"So go and set some off yourself, then," Shadow snapped back at Scourge.

"Now, if you don't mind, you'd better leave me alone before they come along and shoot you for being with me."

Scourge heard the ringing and nudged Shadow.

Amella took a few seconds to answer the phone, because she was also playing with the security cameras around the town. She'd hacked into it earlier.

She clicked a few buttons and the various feeds from the vicinity of the park popped onto the screen. Visibility was low, so she turned on a filter that increased contrast so she could see what was going on.

"Okay. Make yourself visible and see how he reacts. I don't think he saw you before, so stare straight at him or take out your badge and polish it or something, to make sure he knows who you are."
